All Glory is Fleeting - The Demise of the Warrior Ethos
US Defense Watch ^ | November 28, 2015 | Ray Starmann

The current situation in the world can only be described as precarious. ISIS and radical jihadis are wreaking havoc across the globe. Old allies are frustrated with a complete lack of US leadership and old enemies like Russia are on the move.

We’ve gone from the days in 1989, where Ronald Reagan was told, “the world is quiet” during his last days in office, to “the world is on fire.” Coupled with this, is the state of the US military, which is reeling from readiness, budget and social issues. Added to the military’s problems is what I call, “the demise of the warrior ethos” itself inside the US military.

Across the four services: the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Marines, the warrior is an endangered species, traversing slowly and cautiously through the hallways of the Pentagon as politically correct social engineer hunters seek to destroy it.

The demise of the warrior ethos really began in the 1990’s with the Clinton Administration. But, the changes that they wished to implement were miniscule compared to the onslaught of social engineering that has taken place under the Obama White House.

The US military has slowly become a corporation that provides cool uniforms, travel and a boatload of benefits.

How many people actually join the military because they love the military and history and want to be warriors? Oh, there are some out there, but the percent is small and getting smaller.

Instead, the military has become some kind of Swedish neighborhood co-op with something for everyone.

With the slow demise of the warrior ethos and Obama’s purge of anyone offering any resistance, the senior ranks of the military are slowly being filled with passive-aggressive feather merchants who walk on eggshells throughout their careers. For many officers, the military is a great way to get a couple free masters or even a PhD. Writing a thesis on “Peacekeeping in the Sinai” is now more important than learning how to lead an armored brigade while it conducts a movement to contact.

The warrior ethos is being replaced by an ethos of political correctness and pandering to cultural Marxists and radical feminists who have but one mission, the destruction of the warrior in the American military.

In the last 20 years the percent of women in the military has grown significantly. But, instead of women adapting to a male culture, the macho warrior culture has been forced to adapt not only to a feminized culture, but to a radical feminist culture. Anyone who doesn’t want to play ball is out-processed with the speed of a hotel power flush.

While women have a role to play in the national defense, the military has become feminized to the detriment of all. Reality is tough to face and the reality is the military has but one purpose, to fight and win the nation’s wars.

Pregnancy simulators and lactation support facilities and sensitivity classes don’t win wars. Warriors win wars.

The military has become so politicized and so pandering to ridiculous agendas, that they’ve destroyed themselves.

Where is a four-star general or admiral who says, “You know what, we’re not implementing any of this nonsense. Stick it.” That general or admiral no longer exists on active duty.

A dangerous situation has been created, where you have radicals who will do whatever it takes to implement their policies and generals and admirals who are so scared of being fired that they will tolerate anything to save their careers.

Even the most hardened tough guys are so smothered by the sea of PC-ness that they must remain silent, or they will be flipping burgers in 24 hours.

The word is out: warriors need not apply.

Ask yourself this question: how long could Patton last in the military now? How long could a Pappy Boyington last in the service now? For those vets from yesteryear ask yourself how long could your favorite top sergeant, gunny, Navy chief or battalion command sergeant major last now? I know mine couldn’t last five minutes. Even more, I know I couldn’t or wouldn’t last five minutes.

So, who’s left? No doubt there are real warriors still out there. But, they’re literally hunkering down, under the withering fire of PC-ness that shells them all day long. Think about it. We have a military whose sole duty is to create warriors to fight and win; which no longer promotes or worships the warrior. The Brotherhood of War has been replaced by the GenderNeutralHood of War.

Can you say imminent cluster?

What is happening to the US military is not only disastrous for national security, but tragic. The warrior ethos, 250 year old traditions and a way of life have been swept aside by a cultural revolution that has been permitted to flourish because not one soul with stars has had the guts to stand up for what is right.

Not one.

What is the future for a military strongly lacking in warriors and a military that doesn’t worship the warrior ethos?

It loses. It loses spectacularly on the battlefield, on the high seas and in the air.

For those warriors on active duty in the shadows, now is not the time to take cover. Now is the time to regain the creed and the philosophy that the military used to live by.

If the warrior ethos is gone, the US military will vanish into thin air as a capable fighting force.

It does indeed appear that in the US military, All Glory is Fleeting…

“For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeters, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed prisoners walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting.” – Gen. George C. Patton

Our defense budget has been squandered. It is time to forget about the Mideast and start spending on research and engineering. The United States needs to be able to defend itself.

We have a constitutional mandate to do so.

I ‘m not so sure about that. You’re not counting the very large number of Christian warriors being borne out of the assault on America the past 7 years....

People think something like a warrior ethos is made up and passed on

It’s batural law. Tge feminists defy natural law. But it’s feminism that is more fleeting. It’s made up and it defies natural law

The Warrior Ethos has been marginalized for decades.

We used to run as a unit. Then, people started complaining that running with the unit was lowering their PTTest scores. So we started running by ability groups. Then, it was everybody running on their own. It was a mark of your dedication to run by yourself.

They killed teamwork in the name of physical fitness.

You didn’t have to just improve yourself, you had to downgrade your peers. They were competition. The whisper in the boss’ ear. Innuendo. Setting people up for failure.

The enemy became your peers and superiors. Your subordinates became people to be used and blamed.

As much as I’d like to blame Obama solely for the decline of the military, the truth is that it has been declining for decades.

We have a physically fit military that can’t work together and isn’t smart enough to figure out how to win.

Putting forward arguments that practicing LGBT behavior and placing women in combat will not hurt morale and effectiveness ignore the character of military operations. Because Pentagon and political creatures place an impenetrable wall between policies they cherish and the terrible realities of combat, I council young men to never join the armed forces.

Combat operations entail applying and enduring unimaginable brutality until victory. Therefore, only the highest physical abilities and most severe restrictions on human emotions and behaviors can foster the required high morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion. Human sexuality, and therefore LGBT behavior, simply cannot intrude into this extraordinary dimension where only those displaying the greatest savagely win. Because war entails the ultimate Olympics for national defense there is less excuse for merging men and women into this environment than would exist for the athletic competitions every four years.

Combat forms personnel into small, rigid, task oriented units. These people continuously face extraordinary stress punctuated by killing other humans. At the point of collision, men face environments requiring extraordinary physical capabilities and demanding unbelievably sacrificial, primitive and intimate relations.

Such environments are inherently chaotic and brittle. They can be overcome only by a totalitarian leadership and narrow focus unimaginable for those who see any opportunity for social engineering.

The regimental combat teams for infantry, mechanized and armored units are now the playthings of bureaucrats committed to equal opportunity, and dismissive of warriors enduring the brutal carnage imperative for victory. Institutional memories no longer exist for fighting ferocious, shrewd enemies such as the Germans, Japanese, Chinese, and North Vietnamese, who utilized a full array of modern weapons.

Women and the LGBT fraternity not only do not belong at the pointy end of the spear, but should not be holding it to the extent the infantry must depend on their savagery. There is no reason to depart from the writings of Rudyard Kipling and George Orwell that can be synthesized into the quote, “Men sleep peacefully in their beds at night because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”

P.S.
Notice from the ribbons on his uniform that General Dempsey, never fought the enemies mentioned, and now questions the necessity of current high standards which already allow inferior female performance?

Good post. You get it. Keep hammering on it. Truth wins all in the end. The old saying goes that the fools can ignore reality, but not the consequences of that ignorance.

Women out of the foxholes, cockpits, & ships, and strippers back in the enlisted, NCO, & officers clubs.

The Democrats put almost as much energy in trying to stop military members from voting as in having illegals vote. For some reason, the ballots of our service men and women serving abroad never seem to get counted.

They can drive the Warrior types out of the military but they can’t drive them out of existence...

Spot on! I put in 32 years and retired just in time. When I saw Maternity BDUs in the Clothing Sales Store, I knew it was time to go.
