Just as a hint, when the boy said the victim had “attacked” him, maybe it was suggested to be more than just assault. Perhaps he claimed the victim had tried, or succeeded, in *sexually* assaulting him.

That is a completely different deal, and would go a long way in explaining why the entire family pitched in and were so violent, and also why the D.A.’s office is hesitant.
