A former Department of Homeland Security agent says that an investigation he was conducting into a fundamentalist Islamic group operating in the U.S. may have helped stop San Bernardino jihadi Syed Farook had the government not shut down his probe.
During an interview with Fox News' Megyn Kelly on Thursday, Philip Haney said that in 2012 as an agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection's National Targeting Center, he opened an investigation into a Sunni Islamic group called, Tablighi Jamaat, a subset of the fundamentalist Deobandi movement.
But Haney said that just a year into the investigation it was shut down State Department and the Homeland Security Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties.
The reason the investigation was quashed? Because the federal government did not want to profile Islamic groups, Haney told Kelly.
In the process of shutting down Haney's inquiry, the feds also deleted his files, which included information on an organization with ties to Farook's mosque, San Bernardino's Deobandi movement-affiliated Dar-al-Uloom al-Islamia.
And Farook's wife and accomplice, Tashfeen Malik, went to school at Pakistan's al-Huda, which also has ties to the Deobandi movement.

"The FBI has taken heat for failing to immediately classify the San Bernardino shootings as terrorism, but a new report shows that FBI reluctance could have been due to external pressure from the White House.

Report: Congress 'Misled' About Taliban Five to 'Settle a Campaign Promise'
As the House Armed Services Committee released a lengthy report on President Obama's swap of five Taliban detainees for Bowe Bergdahl, one former Guantanamo detainee took a bow this week as a new spokesman for al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
The House report covers the transfer of Taliban communications chief Mohammad Nabi Omari, deputy minister of intelligence Abdul Haq Wasiq, interior minister Khairulla Said Wali Khairkhwa, deputy minister of defense Mohammad Fazl, and senior military commander Mullah Norullah Noori in May 2014 to Qatar.
Chairman Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) noted that since that moment, the committee has been conducting an investigation into the actions of then-Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and senior Pentagon officials.
"Our report finds that the administration clearly broke the law in not notifying Congress of the transfer," Thornberry said. "Leading up to the transfer, DOD officials misled Congress as to the status of negotiations. Pentagon officials best positioned to assess the national security risks were left out of the process, which increases the chances of dangerous consequences from the transfer.".......
.............."Transferring five senior Taliban leaders from GTMO offered the prospect of making other transfers appear to be less threatening or contentious. If these five left GTMO, it could ease the case for the departure of others presumed to be less risky... As if on cue, this week AQAP released a video titled "Guardians of Sharia" featuring Ibrahim Qosi, who cut a plea deal with the tribunal in 2010 and was released to Sudan in July 2012.
Two years later, Qosi had joined AQAP and is now one of the leaders of the al-Qaeda branch in Yemen. In the video, a first-time appearance since his release from Gitmo, he stressed the importance of “individual jihad" against the United States............

Onlookers were left scratching their heads when reporters stampeded the home of San Bernardino shooters Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik on Friday - grabbing personal items in a frenzy to get them on the air.
Apparently, the landlord let members of the media inside the house, providing unprecedented access so quickly after a killing spree.
Authorities have identified Farook and his wife, 27-year-old Malik, as the gunmen who opened fire during a holiday party for county employees at Inland Regional Center, a facility for persons with disabilities about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The rampage left 14 dead and 21 injured.
Viewers watching live-stream footage from within the home - provided by CNN, MSNBC and other outlets - expressed disbelief that the news media would be given free rein over an active crime scene.
The awkward house tours showed broadcasters rummaging through the Farook family's photos, books, driver's licenses, shredded documents and other personal items.
The Twitterverse was sent into a tizzy.....
The surreal moment occurred the same day U.S. officials confirmed that Malik had pledged allegiance to the ISIS terrorist organization in a Facebook post.....
