They like playing around sailboats too. Lots of Dolphin between MDR and Catalina Island.

If no bow wake: water exit and entry altitudes are the same, great effort required
If bow wake: water exit point is ABOVE entry point, jump effort diminished
They are surfing, just a little bit.

I have seen paintings from ancient Greece showing dolphins jumping ahead of ships. Probably on vases or urns but I think also on the walls at Knossos in Crete.

2 1/2 millennia later I have witnessed the descendents of those dolphins surfing in the bow wake of a sailboat in the same waters.
