"American is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system but too early to shoot the bastards." --- Claire Wolfe
To an extent, sure. But you're telling me they will be akin to the backroom deals made by the uniparty today? Can you promise me that those sent to represent the 'right' side of the issues won't cave?
Let's say they did cave - can you imagine 38 states voting to approve? Remember, they would be proposing amendments to the Constitution, and each separate amendment would have to be ratified by 3/4 of the states. So let's say they all got together and colluded to submit an amendment to repeal the 2nd Amendment - do you think there is ANY chance of them getting 38 states to go along?
Complete waste of time.
The Founders believed that a permanent standing army was a threat to liberty so they wrote in Article 1, Section 8: "To raise and support Armies, but no Appropriation of Money to that Use shall be for a longer Term than two Years".
An amendment such as the one that you've proposed above would be treated just like military funding is today.
Abbot is a good Gov, and so is Patrick as Lt. Gov.
A ConCon (yes I know) will likely have delegates chosen by the House. Texas Speaker Joe Straus was first elected by 65 Dems and 11 milquetoast Reps. Calling him a RINO is charitable.
Texas’ delegates will likely be far left of center.
If Texas won’t even field conservative delegates (and she won’t), then how on earth do conservatives hope to get Liberty Amendments? It’s a pipe dream of the highest order and one some are willing to bet the Republic on. It’s like betting your retirement on the Powerball.
The only possible outcome of a ConCon are the Liberal Amendments. The left will compromise left to appease its base. The right will compromise left to appease its donors. Business as usual.
“Oh, and one more thing, Governor, when the State of Texas refuses to accept any more money from the federal government then I might think that youâre actually serious.”
I remember reading on FR that the state of Texas has already refused some fed money. Please do not ask for a source or explanation. I was not interested enough to take notes. ;-)
I have doubts about both a Convention of States and/or a Constitutional Convention.
Either could be hijacked by lefties.
I fear that is true.
The real solution is simpler. Governors must retake their 10th amendment powers, they must resist, if they can't then it is over in any case.
Perhaps but to be serious they have to completely quit dragging on the teat.
Outlawing lobbyism would be a good start.
< /facepalm>
It's called A Convention of States TO PROPOSE AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITUTION.
Amendments to the Constitution are very difficult to pass.
The advantage of the Convention of States is that The People can propose amendments that Congress won't propose, like TERM LIMITS.
Several states, including my own South Carolina, have passed 10th Amendment Resolutions but have you seen any change? I haven't.
I do, actually. Only slightly, but again, there is always that chance. Do you really want to take that chance, given current climate? Just for a second, let's say we see an anti-2nd Amendment proposal and a pro-term limits proposal go to the states. 38 states, as you point out, need to ratify, which means they will debate the issues. Out of those 38, how many will, as mentioned previously, cave to the pressure of, well, if you won't support this, then we won't support that? Are you seriously promising there is ZERO chance that an anti-2nd Amendment proposal WON'T get ratified by 38 states and, again, do you even want to begin by risking that? If so, then I say we get what we deserve.
We already have term limits - it's called election day. Just because you don't get your way doesn't mean you can stomp and snort and try to change the rules. Well, that is, so long as you're not a dummycrat.
I want that.
“It’s called A Convention of States TO PROPOSE AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITUTION.”
Exactly! Are you saying that it could not be hijacked by lefties and/or RINOs?
And, yes, I am well aware that it is difficult to almost impossible to get a proposed amendment passed.
Term limits actually don’t stifle free speech, they stifle the political class.
When the populous was few in number, term limits were a bad idea. There are plenty of qualified individuals who cannot break thru in a primary due to the 2 party system propping itself up with funding of its candidates.
Thank you for your excellent post.
Another FReeper gave it to me for this kind of use. I don’t own it, but I’m sure he wouldn’t object if someone else wanted to use it.
It could not be hijacked.
The convention is just to propose amendments.
The states themselves would still have to ratify them for them to take effect.
In actuality, the conservative states outnumber the liberal ones quite considerably. The problem is the population centers.
If anything, the left would be terrified of how much we could get accomplished by going this route...
