The US Government Has An Internet Killswitch — And It’s None Of Your Business

The Supreme Court has refused to hear a petition concerning the Department of Homeland Security's secretive internet and cellphone killswitch program.

On Monday the Supreme Court declined to hear a petition from the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) that sought to force the Department of Homeland Security to release details of a secret 'killswitch' protocol to shut down cellphone and internet service during emergencies.

EPIC has been fighting since 2011 to release the details of the program, which is known as Standard Operating Procedure 303. EPIC writes:

"On March 9, 2006, the National Communications System ('NCS') approved SOP 303, however it was never released to the public. This secret document codifies a 'shutdown and restoration process for use by commercial and private wireless networks during national crisis.'"

EPIC continues, "In a 2006-2007 Report, the President's National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee ('NSTAC') indicated that SOP 303 would be implemented under the coordination of the National Coordinating Center ('NCC') of the NSTAC, while the decision to shut down service would be made by state Homeland Security Advisors or individuals at DHS. The report indicates that NCC will determine if a shutdown is necessary based on a 'series of questions.'"

Did you really think the Supreme Court would take this up?

More proof the Federal government is unconstrained by the Constitution.

Department of Homeland Security. In my opinion its creation was George W. Bush’s greatest blunder.

Drastic contingencies like this to ubiquitously control public means of communication are the equivalent of South American Dictators’ taking over newspapers and TV/Radio stations.

I’d imagine there is a 21st Century “Night of the Long Knives” protocol also in place.

Yes it was. We have the FBI and CIA who were supposed to be tasked with these responsibilities. Trump needs to kill DHS, along with a dozen other departments and agencies. .

“Trump needs to kill DHS, along with a dozen other departments and agencies.”

Oh, I think he could cut 1200 agencies and the 47% of us who are supporting the Fed’s $20T debt (not adding to it) would notice no effect.

No doubt. Food for thought. Thing is if the switch is thrown, there goes most telephone connections as well.

When they do so, you’ll see many people walking around like zombies looking for brain.

I intend to get my Ham radio operators license and go digital packet radio and find a network to join.

Personally, I think DHS spends most of its time in detecting Homeland Americans who don't fit their mold, amassing information on potential dissidents, and keeping track of where they are (for later). As far as I'm concerned their efforts in terrorism are merely ancillary and perfunctory.

“shut down cellphone and internet service during emergencies.”

What kind of an emergency would there have to be to
warrant suspension of mass communication. The only
party that would benefit from that scenario would be
the government. And who does this government fear the
most? An educated and informed citizenry.

” (’NCS’) approved SOP 303, however it was never released to the public.”

This is to be used not for but against the people. They
fear us and they are readying for war.

“George W. Bush’s greatest blunder.”

It was no blunder. He knew what he was doing. The blunder
is people thinking he was a Republican.
