Blame The Flintstones? Early Man Caused Global Warming, Study Says

The world’s first farmers and their slash-and-burn agriculture may have set off global warming.

A new analysis of ice-core climate data, archaeological evidence and ancient pollen samples is being used to suggest farming some 7,000 years ago helped put the brakes on a natural cooling process of the global climate, possibly contributing the warmer climate seen today.

But the study is expected to raise a few eyebrows, given there were far fewer people on Earth back then and industrialization -- and the coal-fired power plants that come with it -- was still a long ways off.

A study was the work of an international team led by William Ruddiman, a University of Virginia climate scientist, who first grabbed attention a dozen years ago with a controversial theory that humans altered the climate by burning massive areas of forests to clear the way for crops and livestock grazing. Dubbed the “early anthropogenic hypothesis,” Ruddiman and his colleagues found that that carbon dioxide levels rose beginning 7,000 years ago, and methane began rising 5,000 years ago.

It sparked heated debate back then and continues to be debated among some climate scientists.

Climate ‘scientists’ continue to glom onto lots and lots of fat government grants with this sort of utterly nonsensical claptrap.

The money would be far better allocated to defense.

So the Ruddiman guy says farming caused global warming? Sounds to me like he needs to be the first to give up agriculture. He can go live in the woods and eat grubs and berries.

“Ruddiman and his colleagues found that that carbon dioxide levels rose beginning 7,000 years ago, and methane began rising 5,000 years ago” and then, after using very big words that mean absolutely nothing, they applied for their next multi-million dollar grant ...

I always thought that Barney Rubble was up to no good. He was just a bit too cheerful all of the time.

So...mankind started exhaling 7,000 years ago, but did not start farting for another 2,000 years?

Blame? If it was possible that early man caused the ice age climate to warm (ridiculous assertion since recurring ice ages and warming periods preceded Homo Sapiens in the geologic record) shouldn’t the word be “Credit”? I’m tired of reading “science” articles written by people who were obviously stoned (Albert Gore Jr.) or wanking (Bill Nye) through their actual science classes.

Uh huh. The latest estimate I could find offhand is 2 million human beings worldwide at that period. No machinery, nothing but campfires. Compare everything every one of them could do in a lifetime with one volcano and tell me how you’re going to derive signal from all that noise. Color me extremely skeptical.

Early man, yes, but not of the Flintstones sort, and not “slash and burn”.

One article I saw laid the biggest blame on early AGRICULTURAL man, specifically those practicing irrigation farming, and of the set, the subset who pioneered the growing of rice.

The “artificial swamps” that were the result of that development produced both CO2 AND methane in large quantities. And methane is a far stronger greenhouse agent than carbon dioxide.

Yeah that’s why they need more money to shore up those niggly holes proving that despite vast herds of grazing animals far out numbered the human population ... they held it all in for those 4000 years, and it was the lazy conservative right wing meat eating spear clinging woman bashing over the head human male population which caused all this havoc with Earth’s climate.

This will take a very sizable grant to prove, but the EPA will pick up any slack in the funding ...

As soon as early man figured out how to tame the use of fire, any continent with large numbers of the predecessors to homo sapiens sapiens (modern Man) was going to change the climate of the land anyway. Going from essentially zero to many thousands of small fires (and the occasional large fire to clear land) was going to change the climate anyway.
