John Lott: Even Liberal Academics Are Turning Pro-Gun Ownership

From the left and right, people are bombarded with diametrically opposing claims on guns. But most of this bombardment isn’t coming from the National Rifle Association.

Michael Bloomberg is spending far more money — hundreds of millions of dollars — trying to convince Americans that guns should be kept out of the hands of even law-abiding citizens.

And yet, by double-digit margins, Americans say that they feel safer if more people in their neighborhood own guns. The answer is the same on concealed carry.

Most of the media are doing their best to convince Americans that gun ownership is dangerous. Some, such as the New York Times, seem to interview only academics who believe in gun control. But what do the so-called experts really believe?

To find out, Professor Gary Mauser of Canada’s Simon Fraser University and I teamed up to survey researchers who had published gun-related, peer-reviewed empirical research. We limited our search to those who had published in criminology and economics journals over the last 15 years.

We surveyed 130 researchers and ended up with 74 responses — a 57% response rate. Thirty-nine of the respondents had published in criminology journals. The remaining 35 had published in economics journals.

These criminologists and economists agree with the American people by an overwhelming margin.

Economists and criminologists tend to approach their research in very different ways.

First hand experience outweighs preaching.
Second hand knowledge of events of a friend isnt as strong as first hand experience. But it still outweighs preaching.

The most liberal anti gun person that I know has gone out and taken a handgun safety course and purchased a firearm. 10 years ago he would have run me over with his truck just so that he could say “at least it wasn’t a gun that killed him.”

Sign of the times.

My wife used to be liberally minded towards guns. She freaked out every time I pulled any of my firearms out even to just clean them. The truth is she had never fired one. Once when I had my Sig out I placed it on the table and left it there for awhile without saying anything (we don’t have any children living with us). She freaked out for a bit but then I said, “notice that it doesn’t go off or fire itself”? Just bought her her own .380 last month and now she loves target practice on the range.

Anti-gun liberals are obviously mentally handicapped and should be banned from owning a gun. For the rest of us; no problem. :D

The fact that we have to constantly fight them in light of overwhelming evidence that guns are not the problem, criminals are, should be enough to prove my point.

Ironically, or perhaps due to poetic justice, there are more gun owners than ever since we have had a blatant anti-gun nut in the White House and as Attorney General. That bell cannot be un wrung and hopefully people will be teaching their kids at young ages about how to respect and be aware of both the danger and value of having and knowing how to use a good firearm for self and family protection.

A national concealed weapons permit would be the icing on the cake and is needed anyway.

I guess we can now say “The Science Is Settled”. No more debate allowed. More guns less crime. Lol.

I like to ask those who have a phobia of guns why they aren’t afraid to drive a car.
Even with modern safety features, even a minor accident can be and often is fatal. If not to the driver, then a passenger or possibly a pedestrian. A child on a bike perhaps.
Even if not fatal, the injuries can often take a lifetime to heal from.

So again, “you” have to ask yourself, I say, “why aren’t you afraid to drive your car?”
I go further if necessary, but it usually isn’t. Those that are going to “get it” do.
Those that are fixated, never will...

Answer: Because a car is necessary for liberals to go buy video games and weed, go to gay bars, and concerts. That's why.
