Soldier of Fortune magazine to stop publishing after 40 years

Long the beacon in the newsstand for those who yearned to meet interesting people in far off lands- and maybe get into a firefight with them, will fade away to digital only starting in April.

Founded by renowned international man of mystery, Vietnam-era Green Beret Lt. Col. Robert K. Brown, "The Journal of Professional Adventurers" based in Boulder, Colorado will no longer appear in print form moving forward

I used to buy an issue off the newsstand every now and then.

It was certainly interesting.

Does Peter Kokalis still write for them? He was a good friend of my parents.

Sad news. Remember when they hosted their convention in Las Vegas? Competitors needed one extra round, to complete the combat pistol course. The second from last target was a mannequin, in a Red Army uniform. You had to drop the mannequin with a chest shot, them remove a loaded Tokarev pistol from its holster, and fire a final shot to finish the course. From memory, the Soviet embassy lodged a diplomatic protest with the State Department.

Gee I miss the Reagan years.

I was a subscriber back in the 80s...drew some funny looks at school!

I wonder if their past issues have ever been digitized? They should be...there was probably plenty of BS (or at least “enhancement”) in stories, but there was plenty of good material (historic and humerous) there too. One of the funniest stories I read back in the day was a “history” of American rations, particularly centered on C-rats from Vietnam.

I used to read the magazine back when I was in the army. I especially liked the equipment reviews.

I remember reading the magazine in the 80s when i was single and lived in a high rise in Chicago. It was an escape for me into a world that really appealed to me. Sad to hear of its demise.

Well, damn. Gonna have to make a particular point of grabbing a copy or two of that final issue. I think there was some value in having a physical magazine. Digital is going to be hard to carry to the port-a-potty out in the field, and even harder to read when the juice is out.
