In the interests of brevity here's the dangerous part of this bill that's being discussed in California today:

b) A smartphone that is manufactured on or after January 1, 2017, and sold or leased in California, shall be capable of being decrypted and unlocked by its manufacturer or its operating system provider.

Jim Cooper (D) is a former Sacramento Sheriff's Department Deputy. He is no friend to the Constitution and it's no surprise that he wants law enforcement to be able to break into your phone any time they want to.

Whatever they do, I sure hope they don’t look at the mosque he and his buddy attended.

I’m sure it’s all Skittles and Rainbows and Unicorns.

Honestly FReepers, please pay attention to this. Encryption is, at this point, what separates us from them. If they give the keys to government, they’re giving them to criminals too, but I repeat myself. Seriously, this is “last stand” material here. If we’re not allowed to have unbreakable encryption, that means that nothing we do in our digital lives is safe. Please, please educate yourselves on this movement. It’s VERY dangerous territory we’re in.

UNBELIEVABLE! Making the means to secure the 1st Amendment in the modern age ILLEGAL? California is now a tyranny. No other way to put it.

The socialists sure love to say how they support “privacy” but when it really matters they are against a mere citizen enjoying privacy - they want to monitor and regulate everything you do.

Apple should sell their new starship enterprise headquarters in Cupertino and move to Nashville with Carl’s Jr.

Government does not have the right to tell manufacturers what their products will look like.

The government wont look at a foreigners facebook page when they want to come into the country, but they REALLY need into your phone so they can keep you safe.

Agreed...Liberty is being lost, but people are so invested in the primary campaign they are not paying attention.

I don’t get it, frankly. Much of this type of data has been captured by the providers since not long after 9/11/2001. And believe me, the Feds can certainly access that by walking in to the provider with a warrant, which they do. Often.

They should already know exactly who he talked to and for how long. And any text messages are also captured.

I’m sure there’s something else encrypted here but what is it? (I don’t actually know - never had an iPhone).

“Government does not have the right to tell manufacturers what their products will look like.”

That was old America. Now we have a government and industry partnership. Its the new way and it really is for the best. Imagine how one arrow can be broken. But a bundle of arrows organized and tied together are strong.
Look at an old Roman Fasces for example.

The new way really will be amazing. And freedom was over rated, messy, and selfish./s

When government tells private industry what they can and can’t produce this is called “dirigism”.

Dirigism is the economic facet of fascism.

Jim Cooper is an arrogant thug with a badge. He’s one of the reasons why I am very, very happy that I now live in Wyoming where people don’t have to worry about cops breaking down their door at 3am ‘to check on them’.
