A suspected member of an Irish Republican Army splinter group was charged Saturday with trying to kill a Northern Ireland prison officer by placing a booby-trap bomb under his vehicle as police warned of rising security risks as Easter approaches.

Dozens of armed riot police were deployed inside Belfast Magistrates Court to control a rowdy crowd supporting 45-year-old Christopher Robinson, who offered no plea to two charges of attempted murder and possession of a homemade bomb.

Robinson was arrested following the March 4 attack on an off-duty prison officer, who was seriously wounded when a bomb exploded beneath his van as he drove away from his Belfast home to go to work. Robinson’s supporters whistled, cheered and shouted insults at the judge as police led Robinson away in handcuffs.

A faction labeled the “New IRA” claimed responsibility. …

“a booby-trap bomb under his vehicle as police warned of rising security risks as Easter approaches.”

Nothing celebrates the resurrection of the Savior like a bomb under a car.

I’m surprised that they could stay sober long enough to build a working IED.

We’re coming up to the 100th year anniversary of the Belfast uprising (1916), put down with intense ruthlessness by the British. Anger runs very deep; memories are very long, there.

Why would there be crowd supporting an attempted cop killer?

It is worse than that. Sin Fein, the political arm of the IRA controls all but two counties on the Island of Ireland and this includes northern ireland.

There was a redistricting of Ulster last year and Tyrone and Antrim and Derry voting districts were redrawn as upper and mid ulster. The county ID is gone. The conservative protestant voting blocks were eliminated and diluted on purpose to get rid of them.

Sin Fein has nearly all the council seats and nearly has complete control. Sin Fein is thuggery on steroids, supports islamist palestine and is causing a new dark ages to descend on Ireland.

The Ulster economy is not much better than that of the Republic of Ireland. The only thing going for Ireland right now is that the Islamists have not made much of themselves there yet.

Nice realestate at a fair price can be found in Donegal, Purtrush, Bushmills and along the northern coast. But like all UK countries you never own anything unless you are the land lord which most are not. You just have long term leases like in Hawaii.

My guess - this guard was playing rough on some the IRA prisoners. A message was going to be sent...

Oddly, the Brits shot or hanged the organizers of that uprising ... all except Eamon DeValera and Michael Collins, who went on to lead the Irish Republic movement. Collins managed a guerilla group that assassinated dozens of British troopers and Irish Constabulary. DeValera became the first President of the Republic of Ireland.

Exactly right. Raised as bombers and killers, they are incapable of stopping.

"I’m surprised that they could stay sober long enough to build a working IED."

To the contrary, it probably took at least a bottle of Bushmills just to steady their hands enough to connect the wires.

Hard to get anything done when you have to keep swatting those little purple elephants off the work bench.

Because they are hardline republicans who will support any act of violence against anyone to gain their goal.

Nope, they just want to kill either a soldier or a policeman. Or some sort of state authority.
