Obama says 'dangers are real' in debate over encryption (Sides with the FBI)

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — President Barack Obama sided with law enforcement Friday in the debate pitting encryption and personal privacy against national security, arguing that authorities must be able to access data held on electronic devices because the "dangers are real."

Appearing at an annual tech festival in the Texas capital, Obama delivered his most extensive comments to date on an issue currently being played out in federal court. Apple, one of the world's largest technology companies, is challenging the government's request that it help the FBI access data on a cellphone that was used in the San Bernardino, California, attack that killed 14 people.

The issue has roiled the tech industry and divided Obama's advisers, but the president appeared to side Friday with law enforcement despite also saying the matter would not be settled by adopting an "absolutist view."

Obama restated his commitment to strong encryption but also raised the question of how would authorities catch child pornographers or disrupt terrorist plots if smartphones and other electronic devices are designed in ways that keep the data on them locked away forever.

The hell you say. The dangers are real but you continue to let people stroll on in with no vetting process.

No disrespect intended, Mr. President, but you suck.

Any skilled programmer can write an application with hard encryption. It’s the hardware the app runs on that is the weak point.

It’s all the devices that they want to compromise.

Compromised HDs, smart phones, SoCs, Routers, PC motherboards, Thumbdrives, SD cards etc, etc.

It would be a hard sell to ban hard encryption itself so they figure they will just make all the hardware insecure and screw us over that way.

In many cases they wail about something like an iPhone that they can’t break.... I suspect they want to convince people that certain devices are secure and so entice them to place important data onto the devices.

Most people are dumb enough to fall for it.

Trump also is fer it.

If that is true it's worrying.

I knew the entire GOPee crowd was of like mind with Obama and support weakening of our right to privacy.

Of late the GOPee crowd seems to include almost everyone not named Trump :-(

Trump said as president he would force Apple to unlock it and even called for a boycott of Apple over it.

That boycott seems to have fallen by the wayside.

The number of their own citizens killed by leftist governments in the last 100 years is over 100 million. I know where the danger lies. FUBO.

That’s just stupid.
I hope Trump thinks about this a bit more and comes to a more constitutional position.

Making hard encryption illegal is as stupid as making it illegal to go into an alley and speak to someone in a whisper so you cannot be overheard.

The left would love to abridge the 5th amendment in regards to encryption. They don’t want you to be able to refuse to divulge a password because it might incriminate you.

This war on privacy is leading to a very dark place IMO.

According to my memory, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in favor of abortion because of some mystical "right to privacy" that they found in the Constitution. I've read my copy of the Constitution three times without discovering a "right to privacy".

It is either there, or it is not. If it is there, seems to me a "right to privacy" must apply to cellphone use as well as pregnant mothers to be. Such a "right" applies both or neither.

Let’s see:
1. Obama imports huge numbers of foreign criminals.
2. Obama imports large numbers of foreign terrorists.
3. Obama demands spyware in all electronic devices of ordinary citizens in order to protect them from criminals and terrorists.

I am insane, so as a result, it makes perfect sense to me.
