Why Trump Is Winning: The Hypocrisy -- And Disaster -- Of American Trade Policy
Forbes ^ | February 1, 2016 | Eamonn Fingleton

Posted on 03/15/2016 9:11:11 PM PDT by gg188

Now finally after Donald Trump’s apotheosis, Americans are beginning to learn the truth.

Factory workers in the old Soviet Union had a cynical joke: “We pretend to work. They [the bosses] pretend to pay us.” Similar logic applies in the world trading system. Washington pretends to write the rules; other nations pretend to obey them.

For two generations already, increasingly pathetic American trade officials have turned a blind eye to the blatant barriers facing American exports in key foreign markets. The result has been a tragic roll-call of factory closures in the American heartland.

The problem with free trade is not just that other countries cheat but that they see no reason not to cheat. As Donald Trump has pointed out, the enforcers in Washington who are supposed to hold cheaters to account are cream puffs. Meanwhile cheating confers several key benefits that American officials and commentators consistently sweep under the rug: just the most obvious is that it forces the transfer of American production technology. Consider how China has manipulated General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. They have been told that to sell in China they must manufacture there. Not only that, they must bring their best production technology, which then promptly leaks to Chinese competitors. The result is that China’s productivity soars and in the longer run countless American jobs that were formerly sustained by such technology are wiped out as yet another emergent Chinese industry starts exporting to the United States (the Chinese auto industry is already exporting to other parts of the world and can be expected within a decade to target the U.S. market).

Oh my... Forbes speaks truth to power? For the last 30 years America as exported jobs, money, and the infrastructure to manufacture because of POLICIES designed to do just that. The global plantation can only happen if America is downsized. Trade war? No. But we CAN protect the industries that provide the very capabilities that we MUST have to defend ourselves financially AND militarily. Google cannot build bombs.

The fact the Chinese don’t want Trump elected is all the more reason to elect him.

I was in china when Clinton agreed for China to enter the WTO and granted MFN status.

I simply couldn’t grasp it, except as a brief headline grab by Clinton. American auto parts, for example, were subject to a 35% import duty, ultimately, after many years, declining to somewhere around 15%

Meanwhile, the USA allowed duty-free access to China-manufactured auto parts.

Levin and others have been wrapping our current trade policy up in the Reagan/Constitutional flag ..saying if we disagree and oppose our current trajectory , we are somehow un-Patriotic ... they are sick and delusional ...this can’t go on forever

The corrupt, rotten-to-the-core GOPe has brought Trump, and therefore its own destruction, upon itself.

The GOPe has sandbagged and backstabbed Evangelicals, Tea Partiers, and Constitutional Conservative candidates for years and deserves the upcoming annihilation it will receive in November.

There is no way Trump is going to beat Hillary (he will be crushed). However, he will bring destruction to the GOPe-led Republican Party, and that is the most beneficial outcome possible.

'There is no way Trump is going to beat Hillary (he will be crushed)'

Kinda odd that you are saying that. Why even show up to vote if it is already decided. Stay home if you must, but don't give up already in 'public'.

He’s winning because the PC police can’t shut him up. I’ve been waiting a long time for such a man.

YOu say. I say Trump slaughters hilary; and Salon, a massive hilary supporter, concurs.
I have seldom seen more abject defeatist drivel in my life.

I agree with you, but the poster should put Krauthammer in place of where Rush is. Rush is trying his best to be evenhanded in the primary phase.
He will be Trump’s biggest supporter in the General.

Forbes is captain obvious here, but good to see one of these people leak out the truth of what this so called experiment in “free trade” has been all about.

Trade policy is only part of the equation.

Environmental policies make doing business here more expensive if you manufacture anything.

Moving target environmental standards policies are killing the coal fired electrical generation industry, and with it, coal mining as well.

Anti-fraccing policies will guarantee the current surplus of oil and gas will not last, not for motor fuels and not for power generation.

Metals mining and smelting have also suffered.

Why not use others' resources and manufacturing when it has been rendered cheaper by regulations here?

I’ve been waiting my whole life for a President to come along and really mean it regarding “leveling the playing field” on international trade.

Fingers crossed for Trump
