Panama Canal expansion seen to open by July
Manila Bulletin | March 23, 2016 | NAUREEN S. MALIK

Posted on 03/23/2016 8:09:49 PM PDT by george76

The expansion of the Panama Canal, a $5.3 billion project almost two years behind schedule and plagued by cost overruns and contractor disputes, is expected to open by the end of June, according to the agency that operates the waterway.

The Panama Canal Authority has resolved problems associated with contractors and seepage from the new locks discovered during testing, said Jose Ramon Arango, senior international trade specialist at the agency that operates the 50-mile (77- kilometer) waterway connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The authority is planning a test of the new locks with a tanker in May

...

The expansion stands to shift international trade routes, allowing ships to reach Asia from the US Gulf Coast more than two weeks faster than they would going east through the Suez Canal. It’ll make room for vessels with the capacity to carry 12,600 containers, almost three times what the existing locks permit, and will be able to handle tankers carrying liquefied natural gas.

A man, a plan, a canal, Panama.

Maybe the best palindrome ever.

Maybe the best palindrome ever.

"Able was I ere I saw Elba" in my opinion is better because it is a palindrome including the spaces.

Runner up: First Palindrome: "Madam, I'm Adam."

Yes, I guess you are allowed to ignore capital letters and punctuation.

Seepage? More like a torrent. QC about what you’d expect from Chinese using Panamanian workers.

Seepage? More like a torrent.

Few years back on a job had to pass below the Colon locks (while they were closed of course) and it was a creepy experience.

You look at those monster doors, with water spurting out all over, and cannot wait to get the hell off that bridge. Guess changing the gaskets on them is not done so often anymore.

If they go through Panama instead of Suez they would avoid Somali pirates better.
