Justice: How Can Gov’t Function If It Can’t Make People Do Things They Believe Will Damn Their

In oral arguments in the Supreme Court yesterday, Justice Sonia Sotomayor asked an attorney representing East Texas Baptist University, Southern Nazarene University, Geneva College and the Little Sisters of the Poor whether the United States government would ever be able to function if it could not demand that people do things that those people believe will cause their souls to “be damned in some way.”

“Because every believer that’s ever come before us, including the people in the military, are saying that my soul will be damned in some way,” said Sotomayor. “I’m not naysaying that that is a very substantial perceived personal burden by them. But if that’s always going to be substantial, how will we ever have a government that functions? How will we ever have anything that the government can demand people do in objecting…that won’t be a problem?”

The case—Zubik v. Burwell—is looking at the question of whether the Obama administration can force Catholic and Protestant non-profit institutions to cooperate in a government regulatory scheme that would use the health-care plans of those institutions to deliver coverage for sterilizations, contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs and devices.

Full Title: Justice: How Can Gov’t Function If It Can’t Make People Do Things They Believe Will Damn Their Souls?

All of the world's great religions have made it clear that the wanton destruction of innocent life is sinful or "Damning". It is clear that government would abandon its legitimacy if it forced practitioners of a particular faith to abandon this principle.

It’s reassuring that the Wise Latina demonstrates such sensitivity regarding issues of faith.

A better question: How can government be legitimate when it forces individuals and religious organizations to commit or pArticipate in actions which violate their consciences?

Force them at the point of a gun, of course. But you knew that, Ms. Justice, didn’t you?

When the Draft is on, conscientious objectors to war generally (the actual Amish?) do have an ability to avoid service.

Similarly, there should be an exception for people required to provide what they see as the murder of babies.

This is simple. But the “Wise Latina” can’t grasp simple.

Or, as in the Davidian case, burn them all. Women and children too. The people responsible for that atrocity never had to answer for their crimes.

The very fact that a creature who could ask such a question as Sotomayor posed was elevated to the USSC is an indicator that the historical period of the USA operating as a Constitutional Republic is dead and gone already.

Justices can be removed by impeachment. In 2017 they should start with her.

“Because every believer that’s ever come before us,..."

There's a whole lot of ego wrapped up in that phrasing. They're all supplicants before the wise Latina, raised up and appointed by King Obama.

This is incredible.

The amount, the levels, the sheer number, of perversities wrapped up in this utterly and - by definition - INHUMAN question is mind boggling.

Sotomayor literally believes she is God.

She is insane.

With that kind of response, from the Wise Latina, I'd be more inclined to ask why God is so long-suffering, and patient, to refrain from raining down fire and brimstone on such a Government/Nation that compels its citizens to 'do things that will damn their souls'...

Although the Wise Latina, probably hasn't cracked open a Bible in a while, she should remember it is better to suffer death than to be cast into Hell for eternity. Fear God, not man.

Hey wise latino Sotomayor and the rest of you nitwits: compulsion to contract is illegal. PPACA is compulsion to contract.

Little Sisters of the Poor, or anyone else, is not bound to contract under threat. PPACA is styled as a law but it is nothing.
