Justice Sotomayor's Vocabulary of Immigration
Center for Immigration Studies ^ | April 11, 2016 | Jerry Kammer

In 2009, when Associate Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote her first opinion as a member of the high court, she used the term "undocumented immigrant" to refer to persons who are in the United States illegally. It is believed to have been the first such usage in the history of the court, where the term "illegal immigrant" had previously been used.

In an interview for last week's NPR program Latino USA, Justice Sotomayor explained her decision. She told host Maria Hinojosa:

"Illegal immigrant" has a sense, I think, in people's minds, that immigrants are all criminals and criminals in a negative sense of drug addicts, thieves, and murderers. And I felt that it was time to change the conversation from the public perception of undocumented aliens as being that kind of criminal.

She is supposed to apply the law and the constitution to cases before the court. She is not supposed to change conversations and perceptions . that’s not her job. But since she is liberal she gets a pass.

I guess the term “wetbacks” is out. That leaves undocumented democrats.

So this wise Latina business has gone to her head??? She thinks she is smarter and more enlightened than the rest of us??? Thus she will lecture us about our perceptions of what is happening and encourage us to be liberal???

She's like Chauncey the gardener with an Ivy League taxpayer funded education.

Justice Sotomayor, what do you call a person who violates immigration laws, employment laws, and tax laws?

“that immigrants are all criminals and criminals in a negative sense”

Exactly, dumb-ox SCJ! They are all criminals because they have come here “ILLEGALLY”! Which part of that is it that you do not understand?

She is a dangerous ideologue but of course we knew that already.

'Illegal immigrant" has a sense, I think, in people's minds, that immigrants are all criminals'

She's happy to stereotype others by claiming THEY are the ones doing the stereotyping - classic leftist tactic.

Sorry, Sonia, but 'illegal immigrant' is a perfectly concise and accurate term. Actually, it should be 'criminal (or international) trespasser' but we'll settle for 'illegal immigrant.' It means you're in the country illegally. The immigrant part is almost surplus to requirements since movement is already implied. And if you have crossed the border illegally, you ARE a criminal. QED.

If they’re not here legally, then they are criminals.
