I attended the GA 5th District Convention. About 50 people, the largest attendance they have ever had. As they have done in past presidential years, a nominating committee had prepared a slate of 3 delegates and 3 alternates. At least 4 others had emailed me that they also were running.
The chair, parliamentarian, secretary and credentials chair on the platform were all on the slate As with 2012, the slate was rejected as a slate. There were nominations from the floor going head-to-head a slated individual vs those not slated.
The chair and parliamentarian declared that it would require a 2/3 vote to reject the slate. So the biggest fight was over Roberts Rules. It was all silly because the vote was 39 to 11 to reject the slate. The chair and parliamentarian fighting for a 2/3 vote for a slate they were on .... and blaming the outsiders for the fight over Roberts Rules technicalities turned 1/3 of the delegates against the slate. So it was the chair and parliamentarian being out-of-touch (for a moment) with the delegates.
So the slated ran individually against those from the floor. The parliamentarian could see that he was going to lose. So he graciously withdrew his name. The Chair and Secretary on the stage also lost head-to-head with those from the floor.
The Trumpster who was slated won. A Trumpster from the floor won.
Nobody ran against the other establishment candidate and she had a free ride the whole night.
In addition to the 3 delegates and 3 alternates chosen in the 14 GA Districts today, 34 more delegates will be chosen at the State Convention in Augusta in the future.
Besides the establishment and candidate aspects, another aspect was that the Congressional district covers parts of 3 counties. None were from DeKalb or Clayton. All 6 slated candidates were from the Fulton part of Atlanta and mostly from the same part of Atlanta ignoring 95% of the district geographically.
Nominations from the floor changed that.
Isn't a Cruz nominee the same as the establishment?
Where did they dig up enough Republicans in that district to even have contested ballots? The Republicans couldn’t even find a sacrificial goat to run for Congress against Lewis in the 4 elections from 2002-2008. The Republicans haven’t won since the post 1970 redistricting when it was made a safe district for Andy Young.
Mike Crane is a very good man -- a real Conservative who cannot be bought. During the last Georgia Senate session, Crane actually voted FOR a bill, a rare event that prompted Lt. Governor Cagle to jokingly order a maintenance check to find out why Crane's green light was on. Casey Cagle is a treacherous bastard (like his boss, Nathan Deal), but that was funny.
Cruz and his supporters are very definitely not establishment.
They are closely alligned with the Trump people in most parts of the country ... at the grassroots level.
The media and movement egos need something to write about to justify their existence. So they try to create stories and divisions where none exist.
Nope. Not even close. Did you read the part about the Cruz delegates running against one of the establishment delegate? It would have been nice to have some Trump supporters try to take out the other establishment delegate, but they seem perfectly OK with letting the GOPe seat their delegates for them.

Not much to say. I was at 6th district, where one slate candidate and two from the floor went through, and similarly for alternates.
My wife and I were at the Cobb County repubbie convention, she was able to get to the next level as an alternate. (I had work out of town then.)
Similar. Establishment expected to walk over everybody - get it done with a by-the-book ritual. Didn’t happen.
They had discussions, Robert’s Rules arguments and votes and re-votes and amendments, slate pre-selections and resolutions were rejected, etc.
Definitely anti-establishment this time. More Cruz supporters in the hierarchy than Trump people, but the GROPe establishment was getting beat up by both.
Our supposed Senate candidate looks really, really worn out, weak.
Loudermilk gave a standard speech, mentioned lots of names of establishment types as references. Didn’t seem to impress people much up at the Cobb convention several weeks ago.
Much the same in the early March Cobb County selection of delegates (GA 7 and 11 I think) ...
“Roberts Rules” nitpicking of the ‘pre-selected” and annointed ones against the floor. Most, not all, of the pre-selected slates and positions were voted down with the establishment not happy.
