Why Trump may be costing Democrats millions for their convention

The GOP is struggling to raise cash from corporate donors, and now Democrats are feeling the pinch.

Republicans have been struggling for months in the shadow of Donald Trump to get corporate sponsors to pony up for their convention. Now Democratic fundraisers are feeling their pain, too.

Several Fortune 500 companies — including Bank of America, Duke Energy and Time Warner —are taking a pass on chipping in for the Democratic convention in Philadelphia or, with just 100 days to go until the event, won't say whether they'll participate. Target, which has had a presence at both parties' conventions in the past, is joining other companies in skipping this summer's events in Philadelphia and Cleveland.

None of the firms are publicly pointing to Trump as the reason they're staying away. But the GOP's more well-documented struggles appear to be taking a toll on Democrats, since many companies prefer to give to both conventions or neither in order to project an image of balance.

Democratic Party officials expect the convention to cost $84 million. The host committee says it has brought in roughly $40 million in pledges and contributions so far.

“It’s easier to say 'no' than 'yes' at this point,” said Michael Meehan, a veteran Democratic political operative who worked on John Kerry's 2004 presidential bid. “Some of our corporate clients have said they are still planning to do both, but reserve the right that we may not send anybody in the end. Come July, their executives might stay home and watch.”

Trump affect/effect already hitting the Democrats where they infest. It does seem the uni-party system is built graft and the establishment does not know what to do when a candidate is self funding and winning and giving everyone in the establishment the finger.

...and Trump has not even started on Hillary yet...

I think there was a huge issue with the last DEM convention also? A lot of people got stiffed or not paid for services. Join that, with all the current situation and a lot of companies are basically realizing that voters vote with their wallets also.

All that the GOPee has to do to turn this around is to play fairly with Donald Trump. All those guys who want to give Donald Trump money for his campaign would jump at the chance to give to the RNC for the convention is Mr. Trump gave them the word.

I wonder if Trump could buy the convention center the Dems are using, just saying.

Either way, it’ll be wasted money as the dems have already annonted Hillary as the winner.

They don’t even need to have a convention.

“They don’t even need to have a convention.”

Philadelphia will be left in the same financial fix as Charlotte when the RATs leave town with millions in unpaid bills to the city and their vendors.

I'm rooting for Cleveland. It's a gritty determined city and everyone here is pulling to have it be a terrific convention location and vacation stopover.

If the majority isn't stolen from Trump and he's assured the nomination, the security in place can deal with the loony protestors inspired by the not-so-invisible hand. At the same time, the city will be flooded with Trump supporters, not locked in the convention hall, but outside spending and enjoying the city. If the nomination is stolen (same story with the dems) normally peace loving folks aren't going to be restrained.

Kasich is our Governor. What is he thinking?

Of course Politico won’t blame Bernie’s anti-bank, anti-Wall Street rhetoric for companies like Bank of America for not sponsoring...

How many of these companies have ALREADY given huge amounts of money to Hillary, and feel that was enough. The Democrat Party can ask the Clinton Foundation for a donation...

Yup - they'll just do like they've been doing, run up bills and not pay them.

Yes. He could bring many new donors, big money donors at that, and millions of voters. They'd rather hold on to their dwindling power than expand.

The Republican Party does not exist to give US a voice. It exists for THEM to retain power. It is clear as day.

The city taxpayers might be screwed, but vendors go into the deal with their eyes wide open. Any vendor who does not demand cash in advance, is essentially saying he's willing to donate his goods and services for free.

"You're welcome."

If the election were held today, who would be your first choice for President of the United States?

Who would be your first choice for Donald Trump's running mate?

Who would be your first choice for Donald Trump's running mate?
