Texas lawmakers named May 26 as "John Wayne Day" in the state.

According to PRNewswire, "Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation declaring the iconic star an honorary Texan."

Wayne rose to fame as one of the most popular movie starts during the 20th century.

PRNewswire reports he's respected not only a talented movie star, but also "as a loving father, a fisherman, a horseman, a hunter, an adventurer and an unabashed patriot of the United States of America."

"The Duke's independent spirit embodies what it means to be a Texan and personifies the storied history of the Lone Star State," said Gov. Abbott. "I am proud to join all Texans in honoring his legacy and celebrating May 26th as 'John Wayne Day'."

"Texas was always an important place to our father," said Ethan Wayne, the son of the movie icon. "He starred, directed and produced one of his most distinguishing films, The Alamo, and told stories of how he felt it could have been his second home. The culture of the state and the strong pride of this American community reflects the spirit of John Wayne himself."

This is from last year, but thought it was appropriate to post, especially considering the way California just denied a day set aside to honor the great American, and actually called him a racist. By the way all three of Wayne's wives were hispanic.

Duke was/is the biggest movie star of all time. The days of one guy being a hit machine the way he was are over. I’ll have a Duke marathon that day.

I knew several relatives of his in Omaha, NE. Michael Morrison was a tax attorney in Omaha. Sadly he drank himself to death. He told ne about the Duke and having the rest his relatives in Iowa and Norfolk, NE.

The Quite Man with Maureen O’Hara. Doesn’t get much better, except for maybe In Harm’s Way.

My middle name is Morrison. I had 3 Great Uncles named Morrison. My Great Grandmother’s maiden name was Morrison. I can barely remember them.

One day I was walking on a dirt road near the house. A guy in a model A pickup came by and slammed on his brakes. Gus Morrison got out and it was obvious he was drunk. He asked my name and when he heard what it was he reached in his pockets and gave me all the money he had. It wasn’t much but to a six year old it was a fortune.

They were all tall and handsome and very popular with the ladies. My Mother told me that all of them died in fights while drunk.

I always wondered if we were kin to Wayne.

And also, believe it or not, an avid collector of Dolls.

About 20 minutes from my house is John Wayne Marina.

“....John Wayne was a frequent visitor to Sequim Bay aboard the family yacht, the “Wild Goose.” John Wayne was struck by the pristine natural elegance of Sequim Bay and believed it was the perfect location for a marina. An ideal destination for water adventurers, the marina stands on land donated by the late film star in 1975.”

I think that is where I will celebrate his birthday. If the weather permits, I’ll be on the bay in my boat. It’s also a great place to bring in Dungeness crab. ;>)

Wayne always said “Red River” was his best film. I probably agree but “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” was close. Also “Quiet Man” was a great one.

In June 1966, John Wayne stopped by to visit Special Forces Operational Detachment A-323 at Camp Trai Bi, Vietnam when he was in country gathering details for his upcoming movie "The Green Berets." He had a beer with us and visited for a while before he departed. He fit right in; he was one of us.

On May 26, I will join two other A-323 veterans and hoist a beer or two in honor of "The Duke." It's too bad we don't have Falstaff beer to do it with.
