Supercharged by winds of up to 70 km/h, the Fort McMurray wildfire ballooned to 85,000 hectares overnight and is now raging across a wide front south of the city.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley and wildfire officials say the fire is expected to continue to burn out of control today as more than 100 firefighters, 10 helicopters and 16 air tankers work to protect homes and critical infrastructure.

One major task on Thursday will be to move up to 25,000 people now sheltering in oilsands work camps north of the city. The province hopes to transport many of those people, who fled Fort McMurray two days ago, by aircraft to Edmonton later today.

The wildfire in Fort McMurray has grown to 210,000 acres from 24,000 acres yesterday, fanned by 45 mph winds overnight. Around midnight, the 800 residents the hamlet of Anzac, AB, 20 miles South of Fort McMurray on Hwy 63, who were sheltering 2,500 Fort MacMurray evacuees, were themselves, told to evacuate. So far, other than two deaths in a car accident on Hwy 881, there are no known human fatalities from the fire. Efforts are now focused on rescuing the 25,000 who evacuated North into the work camps. The work camps and Fort MacKay mark the Northern end of Hwy 63, with just forest, muskeg and the odd trail to the North. With Hwy 63 closed going South into Fort McMurray, the only way out is by aircraft. Luckily, some of the work camps have runways where the C-130J can land and pick up evacuees.

To those FReepers with a spiritual bent, now would be a great time to pray for these folks! Firstly that the Lord make His presence known to ALL who have been effected by this fire, secondly that the fire does not turn North toward the camps, thirdly that they escape, fourthly that there is quenching rain without any lightning, and fifthly that no more homes are burned. WE NEED A HONI (Onias)!

This is so horribly out of control. Praying for heavy rains and an end to the suffering.

Prayers up.

I had no idea the town was so far to the north. Tundra zone, almost.

It must get -40 degrees there in the winter.

Thank you, ma’am. I’m sure these folks appreciate all the prayers that can be mustered! Hopefully this event will open the eyes of the blind, like the Premier and her fellow socialists, to God’s hand in control of all things.

Sounds like a good place to send Syrian Refugee’s.

Send them up there to put out the fire first.

Fort McMurray is about 235 miles NNE of Edmonton, so it can get VERY cold in the winter. Unlike Calgary, Fort McMurray does not get chinooks. Being so far North, it has even shorter days than Edmonton in the winter, though in the summer, an unrushed 18 hole round of golf can be started at 8:00PM, with no problem.

“.....100 firefighters.....”
________________________________

Is that a typo? That number of firefighters seems low for a disaster of this epic proportion.

This is horrible. I can’t remember another instance of a wildfire getting into such a large city. We had one get into the outskirts of Colorado Springs a few years ago, but not nearly as many houses were affected.

When I was there during the summer I could read in my tent at 12 o’clock at ‘night’ by the light in the sky.

A nice thought, but don’t hold your breath.

Notice that the Al Rashid Mosque in Edmonton is listed as an evacuation centre.

(Christian) prayers for the affected.
