WASHINGTON (AP) — The Navy has fired the commander of the 10 American sailors who wandered into Iranian territorial waters in the Persian Gulf and were captured and held by Iran for about 15 hours.

In a statement Thursday, the Navy said it had lost confidence in Cmdr. Eric Rasch, who was the executive officer of the squadron that included the 10 sailors at the time of the January incident. He was responsible for the training and readiness of the more than 400 sailors in the unit.

A Navy official said Rasch failed to provide effective leadership, leading to a lack of oversight, complacency and failure to maintain standards in the unit. The official was not authorized to discuss the details publicly so spoke on condition of anonymity.

I think that line fits Obama just as well, if not better.

Firing means out of the navy or demoted but still in the navy>

Rasch has been relieved of his command duties and reassigned, the Navy said

Looked it up from article. In reality this is probably a career killer and something employers look up online. When I read stories like this I don't think my job is high stress at all.

...who was the executive officer of the squadron...

How does an executive officer become the commanding officer?

Is this the regime saying he wasn't fag enough to not be sacrificed?

This was humiliating. In this case, I agree with the relief of command.

I also know that $#!t flows downhill and many above the commander should be long gone. That includes some civilians in the Navy Department and the national command authorities.

This was a set up from the beginning. They were ordered to go there and get captured.

I agree with you. It was a set-up by the Obama administration to demoralize the armed forces.

The XO who happens to be a Commander, isn’t the Commanding Officer of the unit. They fired the wrong man. The XO should now become the CO.

The real question is this: Do they or do they not have 20 years? If so they can quietly leave the service. Lloyd Buchcer of the USS Pueblo lasted 4 years and was let go. The Pueblo folks were left to hang out to dry. No backup. The Persian gulf is a bad neighborhood. No excuses to be tolerated, especially the crybaby.

Firing means relieved from Command for cause. Not dismissed from the Navy. However, he may as well get out because there will be no promotions on the horizon for this individual.

Yeah, it's weird to me that they put this all on the XO while the CO, it appears, is held blameless for his supposedly lax ship which had poor readiness. If nothing else the CO should have been kicking the XOs ass if this was the real state of the ship.
