Skip to comments.CBS poll: Plurality of Americans now disapprove of decision to use the atomic bomb on Japan

An addendum to Larrys item this morning, which correctly diagnosed Obamas appearance in Hiroshima as a bit more apologetic than the White House wants observers to believe. If you come to the site of an act that ended four years of horrendous war and insist that a moral revolution is needed to ensure that such acts arent repeated, youre obviously making a statement about the morality of that original act. If you want to protest guns, you dont do it at a place where someone once used one to defend himself successfully from a threat. You do it at a site where one was used without justification, to murder.
But I digress. After decades of Americans defending Trumans decision to drop the bomb, weve now had enough population churn to finally move the numbers. People who lived through the meat grinder of World War II are dying off, replaced by people whove never lived in a country that has a military draft, let alone one that might have placed them in the middle of a maelstrom like X-Day. Go figure that when Gallup polled the public in August 1945 on whether they approved of the development of the atomic bomb, fully 69 percent said yes. Fast-forward 71 years and here we are.

Howard Zinn is smiling in Hell.
In a bizarre twist, some of those who disapprove would not be here today if it had not been dropped.
Yeah. Prolly has a lot to do with this white guilt we’re being force fed.
Bottom line: japan attacked us first. We ended the war & saved millions of lives in doing so.
They wouldn’t want to fight them, either, which is the ironic part.
Dropping the bomb eliminated the need to do that.
Cuz they’re IDIOTS:
Yalta Agreement REQUIRED Stalin to be in on the conquest of the Japanese Home Islands WITHIN SIX MONTHS of Hitler’s fall.
ALL early intel suggested Stalin would NOT simply be a liberator of new lands, that HE WOULD STAY.
The atom bomb gave the USA a way to totally exclude the Soviets, thereby preserving the national sub-division fate that befell Germany, Korea and later Vietnam.
We would have had North Japan/South Japan, much as Korea today.
The Japanese accepted defeat cuz they knew the Soviets would HANG their Emperor, much as they’d earlier killed the Czar and his family.
The ONLY land Japan lost that is STILL lost to them was lost to the Soviets —two islands near Hokkaido.
They kept their Emperor and avoided being subdivided.
The mass ignorance in this nation is staggering.
Everyone should read “Downfall” by Richard Frank.
The real reason the Left disapproved using the A-Bomb, it kept the Soviets out of Japan.
....In a bizarre twist, some of those who disapprove would not be here today if it had not been dropped....
Count me as one of those.
Well then I suppose we should retrograde back to 1945 and say “Hey, just a goldurn minit here” .... right?
This leads me to believe, personally, that eventually our planet will self destruct due to extraordinary ignorance.
These same ass holes don’t know enough history to answer the question in the 1st place. Theres a need for rules. Rule #1...do you know the circumstances as to why the bomb was dropped in the 1st place?
I wonder why? Could it be because the communist manifesto has been followed to make sure our schools don’t teach history anymore - other than to make America the bad guys?
Opponents of the strike wanted a bloodbath to sate their bloodlust.
My father was an infantryman about to be sent to the Pacific theater for the impending invasion of Japan. Because Truman ordered the atomic bombings, the Japs surrendered. I’m here for that reason alone.
Pardon me if I don’t join this “plurality”. Today’s Japanese think WWII began on August 6, 1945. More than a billion Chinese will strenuously disagree.
Ironically, a significant portion of that same plurality would not be here to disapprove had the bombs not been dropped. They would never have been born due to the wartime deaths of their fathers/grandfathers.
I have a very strong feeling you are CORRECT.
