Count me in as being saved by the Bomb. My father, after having survived as an infantryman in the hedgerows, the breakout through France, the Hurtgen forest and the Bulge, was liberated from a POW camp and sent home to train the new meat for the grinder of Operation Olympic, and he was going to ship out with them.
When he and the other combat vets heard about the first bomb, he said they cheered and wept, not from grief but from joy and relief. Every one of them knew that invading Japan meant they were going to be killed or maimed.
It’s the schools - the text books are changing the facts of history or just omitting them.
