A comment after the article:

I am an expat living in Venezuela. First let me say that my reaction upon reading this article was, “FINALLY! Someone outside of Venezuela ‘gets it’”. However, I would note that this article only address the economic condition of the country without including the political context. Currently, at least 70-80% of the population desperately want a change in government. The current regime has suborned all of the democratic institutions of democracy and ignores the letter and intent of the Constitution. It is using its control to blatantly intimidate the population and block all of the Opposition’s efforts to effect democratic change.

All of the conditions for a successful popular uprising to overthrow the Maduro regime already exist. Venezuela does NOT need, and is not asking, the International community to actively intervene. What it DOES need, and IS asking for, is that the International Community recognize the truth, condemn the existing regime, and acknowledge its lack of constitutionality and democratic legitimacy. When the Opposition controlled National Assembly declares that the president and supreme court are unconstitutional, they need the International Community to understand why, and to not call it a “Coup” and support the illegitimate regime, such as occurred in Honduras.

After the change in government, there is much that the International Community can and should do. At such time, help will be welcome. Right now, Venezuela only needs international assurances that when they do what is necessary, they will not be punished for it.

Cuba allowed many criminals to come to America. Venezuela will be very happy to allow unhappy people to cross our borders. Criminals, particularly.

Kinda surprised that Obama hasn’t used this as an excuse to import a few million Venezualans to America.

Yep.

Although to their credit they did manage to throw the bum out once.

But world pressure was such that they were forced to let him back in.

Some people here on FR were clutching their pearls in horror that instead of just waiting for the next election and voting him out they had a coup.

When it was pointed out to them that Chavez was rewriting the rules so he would be a dictator they stuck their heads in the sand and declared that I had no way of knowing what he intended to do.

I really wish I had not been right.

I give it four to eight years if Trump wins. I was a young person when Reagan was elected and thought the world had changed for good and for the better. It was for about 8 or 12 years. But I was terribly wrong and naïve. It changed for the worse under Clinton and is not going to get any better until, maybe, we lose everything.

These leaders will be remembered as those responsible for the first mass famine in the Americas, and the world will not forgive them.

The people of Venezuela voted for this. Repeatedly. They are responsible.

Already in the U.S., and they know enough to head for the public libraries and ask the reference librarians how to log on to “ Access Florida” ie— the food stamp and Medicaid program. Oh, and free cash too.

Walking?

Walking where?

To Colombia?

Crossing the Andes mountains, pass the Colombian border guards and though the jungle and drug lord territory?

And then across the Andes again to get pass the Panamanian border guards?

A few, very few, might make it.

Seventeen years of nationalizations and confiscation of private industries, farms, cattle ranches, distribution companies, sugar mills, and even shopping malls have completely destroyed not only the local production, but the distribution networks necessary for the normal functioning of the economy.

That is the exact problem. They have destroyed their infrastructure.

When Socialists start counting the votes, it no longer matters who votes or how often!

Stalin put it best! It’s those that count the votes that matter!

Thats why the are using activist federal judges, and stacking the supreme court. Judges should never have the ability to create law. Yet they do it non-stop here in the uss of a.

In what was once one of the most high-income, modern and "developed" countries of the Americas.

It's not only the commies and socialists and it's not only South America.

Failed regressive ideologies destroy nations and cultures and lives around the world.
