J.C. Penney is opening an IT office in Bangalore, India, as it restructures that critical department which was hurt during the retailer's failed reinvention in 2012 and 2013. The new IT office will have an emphasis on analytics, innovation and reporting capabilities, said Penney spokesman Joey Thomas.

With some IT job functions moving to India, some jobs now performed by contract employees in Penney's Plano headquarters will be cut, but Thomas didn't say how many.

Penney is hiring full-time IT engineers and analytics professionals for the new office in India and in Plano, he said.

Before we blame the workers at JC Penney - let's remember a CEO they brought in from Apple tried to transform the retail experience into a copy of the Apple retail store and it was a disaster. The wages of the workers is not what drives outsourcing but the screw ups of the upper management and executive classes.

Penney’s like Macy’s is hanging by a thread. Neither will be around much longer.

Not exactly true of Macy’s. JC’s damage was internally made.

It will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

In my experience, Bangalore employees aren’t innovative. Their training and culture just doesn’t let that happen.

Given a sufficiently detailed design, they can grind out mediocre code in about twice the time a programmer from Western culture could do it. And after all the bugs are solved by someone else, it can be put into productive use.

This may seem insensitive to some, but I worked at many companies as a consultant. This pattern repeated itself over and over. The bean counters never figure out that out-sourcing is actually costing them MORE money, in the long run.

I worked for a company that brought in an ex-Apple exec as the CEO who would “take us to the next level”. Nobody told us that the next level would be bankruptcy.

Penney’s like Macy’s is hanging by a thread.

***********

I’m amazed that stores like Penney’s, Sears, K-Mart are still able to hang.
When I’ve been in one there are small numbers of customers.

“Penney fell behind on its e-commerce and digital platforms during former CEO Ron Johnson’s focus on the physical stores.

The retailer is playing catch-up.

Last year, when Marvin Ellison took over as CEO one of his first big moves was to bring in new people to head up the supply chain and build back its online capabilities. Ellison called that period the “18 months in the wilderness” and said he was shocked to find that local store data about product assortments had been wiped out and systems had been unplugged.

And while every other retailer was fixated on its “omnichannel” — creating a seamless shopping experience across stores and online — Penney’s online business was ignored.”

SJW CEO’s don’t have time for picayune details like I.T. and seamless online shopping: too much time spent in approving “both dads” and “both moms” ad cover pics.

We have what I call a “zombie” K-mart in our town.
You go in, the lights are on, the heat/ac works, but nobody in there.
Amazingly this has gone on over a decade.

Yes, Pennys used to be a nice place to shop, now it’s a marketing disaster.

We have a Sears like that.

When you walk through departments other than tools/hardware, there's very little stock. The racks are spread widely apart, to keep the space from looking empty. But, it doesn't work.

Re: Macy’s

You probably have no idea of Jordon Marsh in Framingham Ma?
They built a spectacular circular building along with a double tiered outside mall.

I AM being discriminating owing to you nic. If wrong, apologies.

K Mart is owned by the same guy who owns Sears, or what’s left of it.

Kodak did the same thing. Hired a retired VP from HP - Antonio Perez = "he'll save us!"
Within a few years, Kodak was bankrupt, tens of thousands were downsized and Perez was richer by tens of millions of dollars.

The long run is someone else's problem.

Grandson wanted to go see Dory movie. Told him I wouldn’t take him because of Degenerate’s involvement. Understand movie has turned into a real money maker though.

That depends on the pay. Google employs top people in India, but pays them very high salaries, as much as US workers make.

You hire cheap coders, you get cheap coders. You put out a req for guys with masters or doctorates from top universities, you get a different class of worker.

Exactly.... when will they figure out that $79 an hour x 100 is cheaper than $15 an hour x 600 ?
