Navy secretary defends his unusual picks for ship names
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | September 13, 2016 | Jennifer Mcdermott

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus has raised a few eyebrows with some of the names he has picked for naval ships.

Why, critics questioned, would he name a ship in honor of the late gay rights leader Harvey Milk or after former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords when there are plenty of military heroes to choose from?

These can be renamed - with a rational DOD at least.

But now we get even more proof of Oboal’s real interests.

“Late gay civil right leaders” Harvey Milk was a San Francisco political hack and pedophile.

This is an outrage and disrespectful to the proud heritage of the US Navy.

A real Commander-in-Chief (like Donald Trump for example) would erase the name like a blackboard and rename it in short order.

As much as I hate to acknowledge it, Milk was in the Navy, served as a diving officer on a submarine rescue ship, where he was likely part of the operation to salvage the Missouri when it grounded, and later became a diving instructor. He left the service as a Lt JG. He is certainly a loon, and a prototypical SJW, but he does have service creds in a military occupation that is not for the faint of heart.

I wish we’d stop using people.

Only the truly great should be used occasionally for ship names.

Adjectives are so much better. I like battles, too.

is Mabus gay?! I know he’s a huge lib....but I never thought about that angle. It does make sense however. Isn’t the S of AF out? It would make sense for obama to populate service heads with gays, that’s for sure.

As a proud veteran of the United States Navy, I deplore the naming any ship or vessel after gays. What sailor (other than the new Navy gay rights groups) would want to serve on such vessels. Sorry for my rant and bias but that’s the way it is, live with it.

Usually a bad idea to name something after someone who is still alive (apart from things like Presidential libraries). Of course Washington, DC, was named for George Washington while he was still alive, as were various towns and counties for other living heroes of the American Revolution. Patrick Henry had two counties in his home state named for him while he was alive (Henry County and Patrick County).

Kermit the Frog or Donald Duck would be less offensive choices than Harvey Milk.

Last time I looked, Harvey Milk was dead. Getting shot will do that to you.

The offensive thing about the name is the association with LGBTQWERTY activism, of course.

Should all be named after:
1) Battles (bunker hill, iwo jima, gettysburg...),
2) Concepts (Freedom, Liberty, Constitution, Independence...),
3) Heroes (MOH winners, navy admirals and MC generals NOT elected officials or politicians unless dead at least 25 years and either a US president or DOD/Navy official).

Significant places such as Valley Forge or a State are ok, but not cities (personal animus I suppose).

When rumors first cropped up as he ran for governor, he quickly married the daughter of a prominent banker to try to quell the rumors. They did have several children. But she also sought romance elsewhere.

His divorce was particularly nasty, as he conspired with a priest to tape record his wife’s confession of infidelity, which he used in a custody proceeding.

He later married another woman.
