Obama Will Set Aside 5,000 Square Miles Off New England--Ban Commercial Fishing

The State Department is hosting a two-day conference on the world's oceans, beginning today, and it's expected to produce a raft of announcements and initiatives, including new marine protected areas -- one off the coast of New England -- as well as a ban on single-use plastic bags.

Ahead of the conference, press reports said President Obama on Thursday will establish the first national marine monument in the Atlantic Ocean to permanently protect nearly 5,000 square miles of underwater canyons and mountains off the coast of New England.

The White House said the designation will lead to a ban on commercial fishing -- an industry that made New England famous -- but a 7-year exception will be granted for the lobster and red crab industries. Recreational fishing will be allowed within the monument. Mining and drilling will be banned in the protected area.

Whatever he does can be undone very quickly under Trump with a republican congress.

They are weasels but wont fight him on most of these things.

Does the Constitution allow him to ban single-use plastic bags?

Crazy

I guess he figured all those commercial fishermen would vote Trump anyway.

***********

Congress is weak. Way too weak.

Its supposed to be a CO-EQUAL branch of government but it has abdicated its role and responsibilities. It no longer represents the people.

“If elected, I will rescind my predecessor’s ban on commercial fishing in these waters.”

How Donald Trump wins Maine.

Isn’t there some law that each governmetn regulation has to have some written justification?

Trump should just come out and say “Dont worry folks, I’ll repeal that my first day in office”

Is that just the grocery store bags, or the trash bags, or the custom bags that cover candy bars, fast food bags. What is a one time use bag. Should I start saving them like lightbulbs now?

The same Republican congress that will not stand up to Obama will fight Trump at every turn. Just watch.

They can ban single use plastic bags, but they can’t make us use multi-use plastic bags more than once.

Banning plastic bags is just going to kill a lot more trees. Single use paper works just fine.

Recreational fishing will be allowed within the monument................. Having been raised in a fishing town, you have to read between the lines. Of course there is recreational fishing, but, there are also set limits as to how many you can keep. Spend $50 to go fishing, and come home with 3 lbs. of fish.

Presidents have way too much power. WAY too much.

You've got that right. Presidents are not kings. They are supposed to carry out laws, not make laws.

Any executive order, and any presidential pardon, should be subject to a veto by Congress. If even one House says no, then it's no.
