Obama Will Set Aside 5,000 Square Miles Off New England--Ban Commercial Fishing

The State Department is hosting a two-day conference on the world's oceans, beginning today, and it's expected to produce a raft of announcements and initiatives, including new marine protected areas -- one off the coast of New England -- as well as a ban on single-use plastic bags.

Ahead of the conference, press reports said President Obama on Thursday will establish the first national marine monument in the Atlantic Ocean to permanently protect nearly 5,000 square miles of underwater canyons and mountains off the coast of New England.

The White House said the designation will lead to a ban on commercial fishing -- an industry that made New England famous -- but a 7-year exception will be granted for the lobster and red crab industries. Recreational fishing will be allowed within the monument. Mining and drilling will be banned in the protected area.

I guess he figured all those commercial fishermen would vote Trump anyway.

Well if they weren’t then, they’re voting for Trump now

So do New England fishermen vote D, generally speaking?

I sure hope so. The looks on their faces would be priceless.

Look at the origin of the seafood in Walmart and the grocery store. Most of it is from China. Some of it is caught in US waters and processed in China.

Unless this is expected to somehow help US fisheries, it’s another stupid move that will just raise the cost of food.

We need to restore the import tariffs on foreign fish and foreign food. It’s crazy that we are surrounded by coastal waters and buy our fish from China.

HA. I have no idea what bags are about to be banned. But we do have hundreds of light bulbs in the basement.

does the ban include CONDOMS....... hahhahaha

the offshore monument designation is preposterous and damaging economically
and can not be justified to “protect mountains and canyons”... ridiculous

he ahs already stolen millions of acres of western land using this ploy.... all part of agenda 21....

obama is an internationalist scumbag who views himself as the ruler of the world.... while in fact he is a rodeo clown....... the global laughing stock... America’s retarded kid

Which sadly, SCOTUS disallowed W, when Slick Willie turned out “clean coal” fields into a “monument”, so that his foreign pals would be the ONLY place able to sell their clean coal. :-(

Another federal regulatory blow to the predominately white, middle class New England fishing industry.

The same Republican congress that will not stand up to Obama will fight Trump at every turn. Just watch.

I agree 100%.

Congress fights for its paymasters - the global elite, and they will oppose Trump at every chance they get. They will regrow their atrophied testicles if their rice bowls are threatened.

Also, they are working class. Increasingly, Democrats feel like they can crap with impunity on anyone who is working class. But upper class and lower class are fine (especially if the latter are Government clients).

"Single use paper works just fine."

I can carry an entire grocery shopping trip from my car into the house in one haul when its in plastic bags then hang them from my kitchen cabinet as daily cooking scrap bags.

And the DIL uses a purse she made with recycled plastic grocery bags. Something like this:

Try that with paper sacks. (though they are good for fire starters)
