Abbas and Kerry discuss 'two-state solution'

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday met Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas in New York, where the two discussed the “two-state solution”.

“The Secretary and President Abbas discussed regional challenges and constructive ideas for the way forward to support our shared goal of a two-state solution,” said State Department spokesman John Kirby.

“Kerry stressed the United States’ commitment to this issue and his concern over trends on the ground, including the recent surge in violence and ‎settlement activity,” added Kirby, who said the two “agreed on the importance of continuing to work with key partners to advance the prospects for peace while opposing all efforts that would undermine that goal.”

The meeting between Kerry and Abbas comes amid a renewed push for Israel and the PA to renew peace talks which have been stalled since 2014.

The Russian Foreign Ministry recently announced that Abbas and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu had agreed to meet in Moscow to renew final status talks, though no date has been set for a meeting between the two leaders.

What crap. You want to advance real peace? There's an Arab village on the hill adjacent my town. Arabs come regularly from there to here to work. To enter, they must leave their ID at the gate, and must, to go from job to job, be accompanied by a Jew who will vouch for their good behavior. Far from ideal, but necessary. Certainly it's embarrassing for these workers, one of whom cleans my apartment once a week and does a good, conscientious job. Why not permit both Jewish and Arab merchants to use the empty space between the two towns to open a flea market, open to all. No need for this security regimen, with all it entails, and you'll have free interaction between Jews and Arabs, and security people working to diffuse any potential situations, and people can make money.

It could become an institution, and if successful could be done in other Jewish and Arab towns with empty stretches between, and would certainly advance peace better and more surely than yet another pointless conference between Bibi, Abbas, and the horse's ass, with their tunnel vision fantasy of a two-state "solution".

It’s not pointless. The whole idea is to lean on Israel at the Saudis’ behest, so they have some Islamic street cred. But if you think the goal is piece in our time, then of course it’s pointless. But even looking at the real point of this little exercise, it’s not a point that I care to see carried out. The Saudis can go f@#$ themselves.

Mean while, back in the real world, he’s been cleaning houses for years, and his father as well (30 years) and there is not one slit throat between them in all that time. Everyone knows and likes this family, and I don’t think they are about to up and join Hamas any time soon. You live in America, and if you aren’t living in one fantasy, you’re living in another. I live in Gush Etzion, and the death and destruction are not something that happens on TV here, but something real. And there’s a lot else that does not happen on TV, too.
