Silicon Valley is the capital of disruption. It’s the epicenter of the innovation earthquake. It’s the leader of the new way forward. And Apple, as the industry’s Think Different darling, is at the forefront of the revolution. So much so, in fact, that it decided a patent a sweet bag.
The patent was filed in March and published by the US Patent and Trademark Office last week. The retail vessel carries a beautifully simple name—“bag”—and Apple describes it thusly:
A paper bag is disclosed. The paper bag may include a bag container formed of white solid bleached sulfate paper with at least 60% post-consumer content. “A paper bag is disclosed.” Not since American Beauty have bags been this poetic.

This is something the patent office should reject. A bag is a bag. If they put a logo on it they can copyright it or Trademark it. But a patent is ridiculous.
I want to patent oxygen, and then get royalties from those who use it.
I am very much looking forward to the iBag.
I envision taking it on the train with me and drawing the envy of my fellow commuters. I plan to dump walking shoes and a change of clothes in there. Maybe a snack and a couple cans of beer for the ride home.

Its too early for April Fools so I'll take this seriously as a modern, real life version of the Emperor's New Clothes. Its also a good example of certain trade publications having an orgasm over pretty much anything that Apple does.

If not, the world is crazier than I thought. The problem with capitalism today are the ridiculous patents and lengths of patents; and the selling of patents that are past due the original date. Politicians are being bought out, and in the process, so is competition. That is destroying free market enterprise.
Just remember that Apple is run by a bunch of loopy leftists that are drunk on their own market power. So, an Apple Bag is 1000 times better than just a plain ole bag.

Government already did that. But instead of royalties, they call them taxes. And not everyone breathes at the same rate.

Gizmodo must be upset Apple didn’t put more innovation into the iPhone7.
The phone seems plenty decent to me. I’ll be picking up the iPhone7 plus in the next few months.

It’s very detailed, and having dealt with other Apple packaging I’m sure it’s a magnificent rendition of the shopping bag. Can’t fault Apple for putting in whatever effort it has, and legally ensuring others don’t just copy it outright. Seems stupid, yes, but between the excellence Apple pursues (you may not like what they do, but must admit they work real hard at it) and the propensity of patents to include ridiculous variations (didja know using a USB cable inside a kiosk is patented?), they have to do some things which seem kinda absurd just to ensure their efforts pay off and aren’t flagrantly copied by others. Having dealt with crappy renditions of shopping bags before, I can appreciate someone wanting to do it _right_ for their product line and tell others to bugger off copying it.

BTW: if you stop and examine the current Apple plastic shopping bag, you gotta admit it’s pretty darned impressive for what it is. Now with the move away from plastic bags (prohibited outright in some jurisdictions), they’re trying to make a paper bag so good you’ll feel bad about discarding it.

Its just an application. Go and look at Figure 11-14 and I would bet that is where at least some of the purported novelty is.
I’ll be standing in line at the Apple Store. Should I save a spot for anybody?
