Malls, stores consider new ways to protect shoppers

NEW YORK (AP) — More sophisticated cameras. Security robots. Customers feeling shaken by recent attacks at U.S. malls may not notice huge changes — but mall operators are testing and putting in place new technologies and other measures to offer people more protection without intruding too much on their shopping time.

Mall executives say shoppers have been adamantly opposed to airport security tactics like metal detectors. So they're trying other things, and increasingly using mass notifications that let them send text and email alerts to tenants within seconds in case of a crisis.

The owners of these malls are apparently the last ones to figure out that shoppers already have adopted their own protective measure.

It's called Amazon.com.

Cartoon reminds me of the scene in Blazing Saddles, where all the bad guys have to find change to go through a toll booth.

The EU is pulling the same tactic, namely let the terror increase as a pretext for increasing the surveillance state.

Bigger gun free zone signs will probably work. After all, announcing that you’ve got a mass of unarmed citizens inside will surely deter terrorists and armed robbers.

Yes. The days of the shopping mall are clearly numbered. The convenience and greater variety of goods offered online offer the consumer the ability to shop without the hassle of traffic, parking and teenage gangs all from the comfort of their own home. Within 10 years malls will be obsolete. Can you tell I hate the mall?

I posted this as the first comment after the article:

The Somali muslim terrorist who went on the knife slashing and stabbing rampage in a Minnesota mall was stopped by a citizen who works part time at a tiny police department, not local to the mall. It was not stopped by mall security or local police. Without that armed citizen, the results would have been much more horrific.

The Turkish muslim terrorist who shot and killed four women and one man at the mall in Washington state walked in and out of the mall without hinderence. He was not stopped by mall security, cameras, or local police.

I go to a Mall twice a year for a Shopping Spree with my Besties; it’s more of a gab-fest than true shopping for anything we ‘need’. The rest of the year? On-line shopping for us all.

Milwaukeestan has done a good job of keeping the thugs out of Mayfair Mall. It attracts BIG name stores (Boston Store, Barnes & Noble, Crate & Barrel) and it is nice and clean and well lit and inviting. Other malls in the city have been shut down due to thugs and violence. Whoever is managing Mayfair Mall is doing a bang-up job!

When I was a little kid, they used to flood the parking lot and make an ice rink in the winter months, and it was THE place to go to see Santa each year. ;)

Gosh, I’m OLD, LOL!

You are right about that. I have little inclination to expose myself to danger in one of these free fire zones. That, and the fact that I always carry and always ignore the gun free zone crap.

Stop putting malls in areas served by public transit.

We had a mall here that was having serious issues with gangs of Amish yutes terrorizing the patrons. So the mall owner got county officials to reroute the bus routes so that they no longer stopped at the mall.

DEMOCRAT county officials did this. If Republicans had done it the howls of racism would still be reverberating up and down the valley.

One of the larger malls in my area had managed to remain successful and busy for many years after others had begun to decline. The cry was raised that public transit needed to be made available to that mall because of store closures at other malls, and it was. Now, it’s declining too. The gang-like territorial behavior inside the mall, combined with fear of robbery or assault outside the mall, sends shoppers elsewhere, to other retail establishments or online.

Yup, the death of civility is a sure sign of the death of a society.
