Yahoo scanned hundreds of millions of incoming emails at the behest of U.S. intelligence or law enforcement, according to a report published Tuesday.
The internet company conducted the surveillance last year after receiving a classified demand from the National Security Agency or the FBI, Reuters said in its story. The report cited three former Yahoo employees and another unidentified person familiar with the matter.
Those individuals told Reuters that the government pushed Yahoo to search for a string of letters, numbers or other characters. That meant the fishing expedition could have involved finding a specific phrase or code in the text of an email or an attachment. …

I have yahoo mail. When my husband, overseas, emails me I usually just read them in his “sent” box, otherwise I’d have to wait hours for them to finally show up. I’ve never doubted our emails are intercepted, and by multiple countries/ agencies. This isn’t shocking news to me.
I’ve never believed any email account or anything else on a computer is private.
That’s also why I don’t believe Snowden is a traitor. He didn’t say anything that any thinking person didn’t already know.
I could list off 20 different screw-up’s by Yahoo.
The biggest one for me was that I started up a blog when they offered the service. For roughly 18 months I used the Yahoo blog platform, and then one day they announced it was going away. I wanted to download and keep the 200 odd blogs that I’d written. They talked about a down-load feature....for weeks and weeks. As we got closer to the closure on the blog service....I asked about this download feature and the technician admitted that they couldn’t seem to get it to work. So no way to take my blogs with me. I sat there one night and individually copied each one and pasted it to a new service. Lot of the blog users were really negative about Yahoo after that.
They claim to have all these technicians working for them....but it seems that 99-percent are worthless, and it’s probably just six guys who make the nuts-and-bolts of the operation work as marginally as it does.

Given everyone here seems OK with this, how is this a reasonable search? They are searching through millions of American’s emails, without even a hint of wrongdoing. George Bush was bad enough, but at least he occasionally tried to fight the real enemies. Obama is just fighting us.

I just assume that this is the case for any of the major services - gmail, iCloud, hotmail, etc. There is no freedom in communicating in this world unless you control the encryption keys at all points in the chain between parties.

Ha! Never got one of those. I always thought the guy who had RSA in 3 lines of perl tattooed on his arm to be the best example of that particular government foolishness.
