Sarkozy Defeated In Primary For French Right's Presidential Candidate

Former prime ministers François Fillon and Alain Juppé face second vote on 27 November, after Nicolas Sarkozy suffers humiliating rejection

Angelique Chrisafis in Paris 20 November 2016

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s political career has been effectively ended, after he was dealt a humiliating defeat on Sunday by his former prime minister François Fillon in the first round of the race to choose the rightwing Republican party’s candidate for the presidency next spring.

Fillon, a socially conservative, free-market reformer who admires Margaret Thatcher and voted against same-sex marriage, came close to winning the nomination straight out, with around 43% of the poll. He now faces a second-round runoff against more moderate Alain Juppé, the mayor of Bordeaux who was prime minister under Jacques Chirac. The Guardian view on the French presidency: the far The divisive former president Sarkozy suffered a humiliating defeat, knocked out of the race after he ran a hard-right campaign on French national identity, targeting Muslims and minorities. His poor score after a campaign in which he suggested banning Muslim headscarves from universities and was forced to protest his innocence faced with several legal investigations into corrupt campaign financing, showed he had become just as much a hate figure on the right as on the left.

Feeling kind of Trumpish and Brexit-like, rejection of the old guard, sweeping in a conservative, pro-Thatcherite. Don’t know if this bodes ill or well for Marine Le Pen, but the sentiment appears to be there, just as it has been here and in the UK.

Fillon voted against same sex marriage. That’s welcome.

I used to think a lot of Sarkozy, what little I really knew of him anyway. Now, he has disappointed me, with all his talk of Global Warming and adding taxes to American Goods if we don’t adhere to this Climate Agreement. I thought he was more logical than than, but, alas, he is French. Their interests are always parochial in appearance, but wrapped up in Socialism.

That and his talk about how he was going to use Brussels to cram refugees down Britain's throats. I liked him once too, but now he's in my "Bush" category of politicians I once thought were something they weren't.

That doesn’t even look like her. Of course, most of her glam shots are from 25-30 years old.

You may be right, she just looks different in the pic. If I had to guess, it looks like it was taken in the late ‘80s or early ‘90s. She does keep in shape, obviously, but she looks a bit hard in the face now.

Sarkozy was a global warming fanatics, he has rammed the “Grenelle de l’environnement” through our throat and rained us with regulations and taxes to save the climate. He can go to hell, I will never pardon him for wreaking Lybia and aiding to kill Khadafi.
Problem is Fillon was Sarkozy’s prime minister. I don’t expect much of revolution à-la-Trump from him but he is the less worse so I gave him my vote.
