...”I wish to restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life.”

Because the Roman Catholic Church holds abortion to be such a serious sin, it was long a matter for a bishop who could either hear the woman’s confession himself or delegate that to a priest who was expert in such situations.

But in 2015, Francis allowed all rank-and-file priests for the duration of the Holy Year to grant absolution for an abortion.

Of course abortion can be forgiven. Jesus forgives all sins.

Only God can forgive our sins. He can forgive even this atrocity if He is approached but Man cannot absolve one of one’s sins. If we could do that, Jesus would have never hung on the Cross.

There is one mediator between God and man...I think that is in Hebrews.

Abortion is forgivable. Always has been.

Most priests already have had faculties from their local Bishop to forgive the excommunication penalty for those who procured abortion.

So that doesn’t change anything much in the US

Doesn’t forgiveness also require repentance?

Matthew 18:6

If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.

A man’s sin, no matter how grave, will either be covered utterly and completely by the blood of Christ or that man will bear the punishment himself. A priest has no say in the matter. Skip the middleman and look to Christ and Christ alone. He is rich in mercy and mighty to save.

If the Pope knew the Scriptures and recognized their authority, he would know that church officials have no authority to forgive sins. The Pope is ignoring the Biblical roles of Christ and repentance.

"Of course abortion can be forgiven. Jesus forgives all sins."

"Only God can forgive our sins."

Exactly. Such arrogance.

When are Catholics going to revolt against this “Anti-Pope”??? This is amazing. “This gives a way back to the church for many...” So no downside for killing your child. C’mon Catholics throw his pompa$$ “holiness” out.

John, Chapter 20:

verse 21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you.

22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost.

23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.

The key words are......”.....when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled” with God......”

Most feminists and liberals neither are repentant nor wish to reconcile with God.

Having been to confession, I do believe that most priests can detect repentant people and those trying to reconcile with God.

Just saw a priest on Fox that said that priests don’t forgive sins, God does the actual forgiving and the priest is just an emissary/agent. He also said that Francis wasn’t condoning abortion as he considers it a serious sin but was saying that God is bigger than any of our sins if we go to Him. Makes sense to me.

The Pope has a lot of faults, but I'm pretty sure he knows John 20:22-23 quite well. Since it's a crystal clear grant of authority to "church officials" to forgive sin, I must perforce assume that you've never read it.

If you were a Catholic, wasn't it explained to you that the priest, in administering the sacraments, acts in persona Christi capitis, "in the person of Christ the Head"? That's why he says "This is my body ... this is my blood" when confecting the Eucharist, and "I absolve you of your sins" in the confessional. He's an actor/agent/stand-in, not the source of anything.

I was told a lot of things about priests and their divine powers as I watched them get drunk and ride their lawnmowers into ditches and do all sorts of fallible human things.....There’s a difference between “intercession” and actually wielding the scepter.<p.Believe what you will and I’ll stick to believing in the Blood of Christ - which wouldn’t have had to be spilled if He were going to give frail men the ability to absolve each other of sin....as His game plan for the New Cvenant
