Officials: At least 1 dead in San Antonio sinkhole that swallowed 2 cars

SAN ANTONIO — Emergency crews are working to pull a body from a vehicle that was swallowed by a large sinkhole on the Southwest Side overnight.

Fire Chief Charles Hood has not yet provided details on the person inside, but said crews are treating working the scene as a recovery rather than a rescue at this point.

The sinkhole, in the 8400 block of Quintana Road, is the diameter of the street and is holding about 12 feet of water. It was likely caused by a large sewer line rupture Sunday evening, officials said.

San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor called the incident a "terrible tragedy" at a morning news conference.

Firefighters and EMS personnel initially responded at approximately 7:30 p.m. Sunday and found two cars inside the sinkhole, according to officials at the scene on Sunday.

One of the people who drove into the sinkhole was a 60-year-old man. A man and a woman who helped him out of the sinkhole were rescued from the hole and transported to a hospital with minor injuries, fire officials said Sunday.

Both of the cars are still in the hole, with one of them being more than 90 percent under water. Officials believe the person in that car is dead.

Oh my, that is horrible.
Landing upside-down, the poor driver perhaps had only seconds to unbuckle, extricate himself/herself, and swim to surface of the murky water.

Upside down submerged in water for over 12 hours and they 'believe' the person is dead. Some real rocket scientists there!

Several years back, our local fire and EMS officials responded to a major car crash scene and declared one occupant of the car was dead. Ooops, he was not dead.

A couple of hours later, they double checked and found signs of life. Too late. The victim finally did die in route to the hospital.

This, unfortunately, demonstrates that sometimes, no matter what you do, no matter how cautious you may be, your number comes up! The morbid humor goes through one’s mind but no one likes to think that such perversities of fate can indeed end us without warning!

R.I.P. to the victim but prayers for the loved one(s) that have to face the aftermath!

Link to the story I referenced in post 6. This happened 9 years ago, but I still remember it.

FTA.....

Hood said that an investigation into his department's response will continue, but added that he did not feel like any employees would be punished because of the incident. He also met with Smith's family Monday.

"I can offer sympathy and tell them I'm sorry and give them a hug," Hood said. "I'm very sorry that it happened."

Many years ago, a small bridge in Alabama collapsed. At least one car fell into the river...but one stopped with its front wheels over the edge. I still remember the headline “The Lord Be Very Good To Us”, which was a quote from the driver.

A split second different, and he would have been dead.

Ariel might have a chance, too.

Should the city limits signs of San Antonio have “Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here” written on them?
