N. Korea building 8th runway exclusively for Kim Jong-un: report

SEOUL, Dec. 8 (Yonhap) -- North Korea is building another runway exclusively for its leader Kim Jong-un in the North's South Pyongan Province, a U.S.-based broadcaster said Thursday.

Curtis Melvin, a researcher at the US-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University, told Radio Free Asia (RFA) that the 870-meter-long airstrip in Unsan County, the eighth one for Kim, is located near a cement plant, mine and new industrial complex being built.

The location of the airstrip strengthens the belief that it will be used for Kim's field inspections of industrial facilities, said Melvin, who analyzes satellite imagery for clues to North Korean affairs.

He also said that Kim's seventh airstrip had been spotted near an equestrian center in Pyongyang in May, adding the North has constructed a series of runways for Kim.

I’ve heard that the number eight is valued by many Chinese as a lucky number, one that brings good fortune. Not surprising that Kim Jong Un wants to acquire the number in this form.
I’m guessing that North Korea may have similar numerologic customs and beliefs as the Chinese.

Usually in china the odd numbers are considered more lucky - this is why most pagodas have 3, 5, 7, or 9 levels.

4 is considered unlucky in nearly every asian culture - this is due to the pronunciation being very similar to the word for death. In some places in the east you will not see a 4th floor of a building similar to not seeing a 13th floor in some places in the west.

I’ve not heard of any specific connotation related to eight, although most (but not all) pronunciations, ba, are similar to the word for father, ba or pa.

Each Korea is in different sphere of influences. S. Korea is more exposed to Western culture. In time S. Koreans have come to adopt number seven as a lucky number. N. Korea is under China/Russia influence. I have not heard (so far) that N. Koreans embraced number 8 as their lucky number.

North Koreans under Kim have no luck. So,why even pick a number as long as he’s alive??

He must fly in a STOL plane or helicopter. Or maybe he just doesn’t want a visit from AF1.

I like that 8th idea.

Could they build an 8th electric chair or gallows, or dedicate an 8th firing squad just for him?

870-meter-long airstrip...

870-meters is 2854 feet... that is TINY! Unless, all he has to fly are pipers/cessnas/bonanzas.

I fly out of a 2800 foot strip. It is almost exclusively single-engine.

A 747 needs 2300 meters, or 7500 feet, for comparison.

It could be useful for a small emergency get-away plane or he just wants to fly an airplane as his hobby.

Apparently they need a Runway that long just to get his fat ass off the ground.

However, this type of plane can operate out of such a short runway:

Easy to build with lots of slave labor. Just takes a little longer.

It’s about 200 feet long and ends at the cliff.

I was wondering if he was using a Cessna Skyhawk.
