Sowell: Where Are We?
Creators Syndicate ^ | December 13, 2016 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 12/12/2016 2:01:03 PM PST by jazusamo

We are now in a kind of political no-man's-land between an administration on its way out and a new administration taking shape. Predictions are always risky — and nowhere more so than in times like these.

What we can do, however, is assess where we are, and what some of the opportunities and dangers are.

The opportunities are many, which is to say that many things are in desperate need of changing, beginning with rebuilding our dangerously neglected and undermined military forces. The monstrosity of ObamaCare needs to be gotten rid of, not just cosmetically adjusted.

Our fundamental freedoms under the Constitution are at stake in the choice of the next nominee to become a Justice of the closely divided Supreme Court. We need someone with both the depth and the strength to resist the pressures and the temptations that have seduced too many supposedly "conservative" justices, over the years, into betraying Constitutional principles.

The current hysteria over "fake news" — including hysteria by people who have done more than their own fair share of faking news — shows the continuing efforts of the political left to stifle free speech in the country at large, as they already have on academic campuses.

"Now that the Republicans have won — not only the presidency but also the Congress, as well as most governorships and state legislatures across the country — do they have the guts to do what they were elected to do?"

I’d guess a number of them don’t.

. The young officers I have encountered are head and shoulders above so many young people of similar ages who are graduates of even our most prestigious colleges and universities.
Nassim Nicholas Taleb (he of Black Swan fame) noted that military officers are the ones who are systematically preoccupied with taking into account the possible impact of what seems highly improbable - until it happens.

With Trump in charge, will they dare to do otherwise?

They say the refs could call a holding penalty on every play in a game. In the same way, a grand jury could indict another senator every day.

For a hundred days, anyway, then they could start again at the beginning with another felony count for them all.

Every one of those scoundrels is a serial felon.

The liberal media are already expressing worry about the number of military people being considered for key positions in the new administration. They would be worried about anyone who has not been brainwashed in the political correctness that reigns among the intelligentsia.

I like the way he exposes the elitist groupthink at the end of the article. Nice touch.

Hey, dsc, you may be on to something.

What if President Trump were to direct his DOJ to select the dirtiest, most prosecutable senator, regardless of party, and go after the creep full-bore.

After conviction and sentencing, it’s next man up.

I’m thinking we would soon see senior senators announcing their retirement.

One swamp drained.

“After conviction and sentencing, it’s next man up.”

I don’t want to wait. One indictment per week, at least.

One of the amazing aspects of the ascendancy of Donald Trump is the manner in which he has smoked out so many allegedly conservative figures that ultimately proved lacking in judgment as they fell in with the #NeverTrump and Cruzer crowd. Tom Sowell is the most disappointing of these misguided people. By his joining himself to the NRO gang, Sowell actively made efforts to destroy the one last chance this country had to save ourselves from impending Marxocrat tyranny and the collapse of the Republic. I will never be able to consider his opinion of any greater value than that of many other supposedly lesser figures who had the prescience to recognize the importance of Trump in a way that Sowell failed to do. I just don’t read his stuff anymore. How the mighty doth fall.

I disagree. Dr. Sowell has an amazing brain and great cognitive skill. That man has made me think HARDER about topics/situations/current events than anyone else ever has.

Do NOT throw the baby out with the bathwater! You are correct that he wasn’t and probably still isn’t, sold on Trump 100%.

If President Elect (LOVE THAT!) Trump DELIVERS, I can guarantee that Dr. Sowell will be one of his biggest fans.

Dr. Sowell’s books are on my nightstand; he has brought to light so many issues that the LefTards and the Enemy Media wanted dead and buried.

Best. Election. Ever. EVER.

Well said, Diana.

Though I’ve been disappointed with Dr. Sowell’s criticism of Donald Trump I’m most hesitant to rule out his opinions of Trump because of his brilliant mind.

He has slowly lessened those criticisms and is addressing the change that’s been needed in Washington, he is now addressing Trump’s nominees for his administration and is agreeing with Trump.

Trump keeps winning, the leftists keeping screaming louder and I’m enjoying every minute of it.

"Fake News" is the newest tactic liberals are using against their OWN followers. It's the current version of the 'since we don't have the power to make changes, why should we worry or argue...' or 'you can't trust anything on the internet...' or any of the other "keep your mind closed' tactics used by liberals to control their brain dead followers and KEEP THEM BRAIN-DEAD...
