Stop Whining about the Electoral College and DO SOMETHING (Amendment)

Hate the Electoral College? Act now to amend the United States Constitution. Instructions are simple. Article V of the Constitution explains, in only 143 words, how to change the parts of the document that brings you to so much pain. Here it is, in full:

Article V

The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments, which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution, when ratified by the legislatures of three fourths of the several states, or by conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other mode of ratification may be proposed by the Congress; provided that no amendment which may be made prior to the year one thousand eight hundred and eight shall in any manner affect the first and fourth clauses in the ninth section of the first article; and that no state, without its consent, shall be deprived of its equal suffrage in the Senate.

Granted, achieving the task set by this process (of only 143 words, remember) is monumental.

Especially since Republicans, who seem rather fond of the EC just now, control both houses of Congress and most of the state legislatures.

But that's not stopping the whiners from taking action to organize an effort to amend and get rid of the institution they hate.

So. Instead of whining, STFU and DO IT.

Reminds me one time in the Army when the one-star, deputy division commander visited on an informal inspection and, inevitably, ran face-to-face into the "company dud." The general says, "You have any complaints, Private?" As exec, I cringed as the guy says, "My boots got holes in them." The general says, "Have you gone to the supply sergeant to ask for a new pair?" The dud says, "Well, no, not yet." And the general, to his everlasting credit, says, "Then stop complaining about your boots and do something about them." That is all.

I had a college educated friend tell me last year that the Electoral College needed to be done away with. She is a reliable Republican, not conservative enough for me.

I tried to explain how it works and how our fly-over-state would be ignored otherwise. She didn’t get it then. She “gets it” now.

How about this solution... let California, Oregon, Washington State and New York City secede from the union. They can have their pure democracy and we will continue to enjoy our Constitutional Republic.

I’ve had this conversation with my liberal friends. I tell them they are exactly right. We should do away with the electoral college as soon as everyone has voter ID. They call me a racist.

But a great rationale to get the blue states to get behind a COS, as the previous story about the General/Private conversation.

They may not have much luck with an anti-EC amendment, but the more states that go for a COS the more likely it will happen. A great thing if you want term limits, abolish the 17th, federalism, ...

Yes, you have to amend the Constitution to get rid of the Electoral College. Let’s see if they can get two-thirds of the state legislatures of the pass it—not a chance!!

Well said. You need only look to the recount in Detroit or to Kalifornia where they encourage illegals to vote. It galls me that an illegal can come into this country, receive benefits paid for by citizens, and illegally vote cancelling my vote. Remove the Electoral College - NEVER!

Sorry but the founders were dead set against mob rule as a form of government and set up the EC to prevent a tyranny of the majority.

Government ethics should be mandatory in the public schools. Younger generations must be taught about the beauty of the electoral college.

The only ones complaining about the electoral college are brainless snowflakes and brainless hollyweird celebrities. The electoral college is fine with the majority of AMERICANS.

At least that is a Constitutionally valid remedy if you really have a problem with the EC.

Actually, it requires the approval of three-fourths of the states to ratify an amendment.

Two-thirds approval is required just to propose one.
