This lawsuit and additional ones sure to be filed will be cracking through the courts long after the plaintiffs have died.

Don’t you think the people who were in the warehouse house knew it was shoddy?

Perhaps not all of them knew. They knew they were going to a venue for a live music show, and may have assumed it was up to code.

We live on certain assumptions in this culture. Like if we buy a packaged item in a grocery store, or an item in a restaurant, we assume it has passed health inspections.

We’re not supposed to operate like a third world country but the “free spirits” want to. It is sad. Those poor people.

There are “artists” here organizing and marching to PREVENT the fire codes etc. being applied in the wake of this tragedy. Believe it or not. It surprised me to see, on SFGate of all places, that most commenters as liberal as they are really put that idea down.

Cities and other units of government generally have ‘sovereign immunity’, although such immunity is far less than it used to be. No doubt such lawsuits are being explored.

As much as I want the owners and the manager to feel this pain, all the lawsuits in the world will not bring those people back from the grave. If the system worked, they would be charged with something. But this is Oakland, and the city is fully Democrat run. It’s filled with corruption and payoffs. Look at the past 4 Mayors: Jerry Brown, Ronald Dellums, Jean Quan, and Libby Shaaf. All Democrats. the first three mayors all had scandalous reigns. Now Libby does. Corruption, scandals, payoffs, etc

Of course.

Stupidity cannot be cured with money, or through education, or by legislation. Stupidity is not a sin, the victim can't help being stupid. But stupidity is the only universal capital crime: the sentence is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out automatically and without pity.

From videos that the news showed on TV, taken before the fire, the place screamed “deathtrap”.

Purely symbolic. I very much doubt that the person illegally renting the space has any money.
