Virginia man spends $1,000 to deliver 300,000 pennies to Lebanon DMV
Bristol Herald Courier ^ | Jan 11, 2017 | Reece Ristau

The 300,000 pennies the Cedar Bluff, Virginia man took to the DMV Wednesday morning to pay sales tax on two new cars weighed in at 1,600 pounds. A mature Holstein cow weighs about 1,500 pounds.

See, Stafford had a bone to pick with the DMV. It wasn’t about agonizingly long lines or a bad picture on his driver’s license: It came down to 10 phone numbers.

And Stafford ended up filing three lawsuits and spending at least $1,005 to give the DMV his 2 cents.

One might feel bad for the Lebanon DMV employees, who chose to count the coins by hand. But Stafford is within his legal right. According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, "United States coins and currency are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes and dues” under the Coinage Act of 1965.

However, private businesses, individuals or organizations do not have to accept coins as payment.

This fool has a serious case of butthurt.

Has he not heard of cutting off your nose to spite your face?

Lets assume he’s 100 percent in the right and the DMV screwed him. It happens. To all of us.

Suck it up buttercup. And move on.

In a legend (urban?) a guy paid some large criminal or civil fine in pennies.

The judge made him count and wrap them in those coin sleeves.

Stafford’s version of the story goes like this: Back in September, he wanted to know which of his four houses spanning two Virginia counties he should list when licensing his son’s new Corvette.

None, ya dumba$$. Use a PO Box for all mail.

Not having any love for the DMV... his issue isn’t with them. It’s with the legislature and Gov. Punk McCauliff

You can’t use a P.O. Box for car registration. You need an actual street address. He has four houses, he wanted to know which one (address) he should use.

Let's not assume anything and stay on topic, shall we? He's totally in the right in paying off his fine in pennies...You really don't get it do you?

He should use the one with the lowest tax rate and the one in the remotest county.

I just moved from an urban county with 1.8 million people to a county with 47,000 people. My auto insurance rates went down.

We had a man send the court pennies for a ticket. I was asked to carry them to the bank. I said nothing doing with that, leave them set till the Judge decided what to do. He said mail them back COD. It weighed 78 pounds. We heard nothing more other than a money order in the mail later.

I use an "actual street address" for my car registration. Just happens that the street address is a UPS Store in town. All my mail goes there. They accept packages where the sender says, "Cannot be delivered to PO Boxes." And they send me an email when I receive a package.

Good service.

I bet you wouldn't say that if you were next in line BEHIND him.

No I wouldn't.....I would have been applauding him and yelling at the DMV to start counting faster. Then I would have left and come back the following day........LOL!
