Portions of Highway 89 buried under 30 feet of snow near Emerald Bay
The Sacramento Bee ^ | January 17th, 2017 | By Cathy Locke

A 4-mile section of Highway 89 on either side of Emerald Bay remains closed, with some sections buried in up to 30 feet of snow, according to the California Department of Transportation.

Caltrans maintenance crews are working to clear the highway, but with more storms expected this week, the highway won’t reopen until an extended period of dry weather allows workers to safely clear the area of snow and debris, according to a Caltrans news release.

Motorists traveling between the south shore of Lake Tahoe and the north or west shore will have to use Highway 50 and Highway 28.

The National Weather Service forecasts new snowfall over the Echo and Donner passes from three storms between Wednesday and Monday.

There is a lot, I mean a lot of snow here in the High Sierra. Mountains of snow. Most people have no idea because all they heard about was the rain.

Crossing Donner Pass on I80 is already like driving through a tunnel.

This is likely the kind of winter the Donner party encountered.

No hope on foot with wagons and horses...wimmin and kids...

Emerald Bay from the article is only about 5600ft.

Donner pass is about 7200ft.

The mountains crest, for 400 miles, at 11,000 - 14,000+ft. The higher you go, the deeper the snow.

That’s a LOT of water.

When this is over, any change we can get Lake Mead up to normal levels from all this?

Most the water is dropping over the Sierras before it gets to the inland mountains.

But they, too, are getting their share.

It is a lot of water. Most people think of California as palm trees and beaches, but we have the heaviest snowfall here in the U.S. almost every year.

You don’t hear much about it because is in rural Eastern California (Trump country). The MSN doesn’t know we exist. Often gets down to -40° here.

I used to live not too far away, Caltrans can clear that pretty fast, they have some huge snow removal equipment because of the tourism to the casinos and ski resorts.

I’ve personally seen 5 feet on the ground on highway 50 at South Shore and it was removed in hours, its a non stop convoy of end dumps and an auger snow blower. Big huge thing you would expect on a train.

Emerald Bay is mostly cliffs above the road, they will just shoot it off into the water below. I miss living there.

I believe Lake Mead is fed via the snowpack from the Rockies via the Colorado River. The Rockies snowpack looks to be a little above normal at the moment.
