...The fire broke out at the Samsung Electronics Co Ltd affiliate's factory in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin earlier on Wednesday and has been extinguished, a Samsung spokesman said, adding that there were no casualties or significant impact to the plant's operations.

...The local fire department, however, said on its microblog that the fire was caused by batteries inside the facility.

The "material that caught fire was lithium batteries inside the production workshops and some half-finished products", the Wuqing branch of the Tianjin Fire Department said in a post on its verified Sina Weibo account. It added it had sent out 110 firefighters and 19 trucks to put out the fire.

SDI is set to start supplying batteries for Samsung's upcoming flagship smartphone Galaxy S8 in the first quarter of this year. The S8 replaces the Galaxy Note 7 mode, which suffered a global recall last year due to battery defects.

In Samsung’s defense, it looks like these were batteries already identified as faulty and stored as waste. They weren’t part of production units.

It would be interesting to know how the fire dept responded. Water makes lithium ignite in fire.

Steam is the medium in electrical generation in coal as well as nuclear plants.

I know your comment was tongue-in-cheek, but honestly how difficult would it be to make a device charger powered by a clockwork mechanism? Those AM/FM/Shortwave radios made by C. Crane are wind up and have been around for 20 years. Some come with flashlights and USB chargers built in. So how hard would it be to make a charger or even the device itself wind up?

Just thinking out loud.

Just for the fun of it I’m buying a miniature steam engine or a stirling engine with a dynamo, they do make them btw that will charge a cell phone.

Some of those Stirling engines are beautiful pieces of artwork.

An ABC fire extinguishing agent or water.

I have a fire extinguishers that are chemically treated water to fight lithium battery fires more efficiently.

Tianjin was the site of a very large industrial accident back in August of 2015; an explosion that resulted in the loss of at least 173 lives.

Here is a picture of the location where the factory once stood:

The Chinese Government is so sensitive about this accident that it apparently blocked any internet searches using phrases that include the words "Tianjin" and "explosion."

Right now I have too much junk. However, I have started a new program where if I want some new toy I will sell two toys first. Kind of like getting rid of regulations.

If I move a steam generator to a strategic necessity category instead of toy I could buy it first and sell two toys later:)
