Three candidates emerge to replace Flynn as national security adviser

Vice Adm. Bob Harward is one name that has come up to replace Flynn as national security adviser, and the leading candidate to get the job, a senior official told Fox News.

Harward is a U.S. Navy SEAL, but also has a previous relationship with Secretary of Defense James Mattis. Harward was the deputy commander of the U.S. Central Command under Mattis and was also the deputy commander of U.S. Joint Forces Command.

He also served on the National Security Council for President George W. Bush and commissioned the National Counter Terrorism Center.

White House sources described Harward as the “toughest guy in the SEALs” and a “real rock.”

A senior administration official added that if Howard is the choice to replace Flynn, he could be in place by the end of the week.

Lt. Gen. Joseph Keith Kellogg, Jr. has been floated as a permanent replacement for Flynn. Trump named him the acting national security adviser after Flynn resigned.

Kellogg is a decorated U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1967 to 2003. He earned the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with “V” device and the Air Medal with “V” device during his time in the Vietnam War

A recommendation from Secretary of Defense James Mattis carries real weight both because of the reputation of General Mattis and because the general was in a position as superior officer to evaluate the performance of Harward while they both served.

On the other hand, it might not be a good thing to have the National Security Advisor beholden to the Secretary of Defense for his appointment because the National Security Advisor must act both as a gatekeeper and an advisor concerning the clamor and claims of the huge defense establishment.

For example, he cannot reflexively favor the position of the Defense Department over the intelligence community or even the State Department if the State Department is right and those other two agencies are wrong, as inconceivable as that might seem to us today.

In any event it is vital that the National Security Advisor have the confidence of all the competing interests for the president's ear that the gatekeeper is unbiased.

I can vouch for Bob, he was my boss in Task Force K-Bar (Afghanistan 2002). Even though he was a Navy Captain he was referred to as the Commodore. The unit was awarded a presidential unit citation by George the 2nd.

He kept a lot of things close to his chest, not a bad trait in the snake pit he may enter.

Forgive my lack of informativeness, I have seen some say Preibus is on the ropes...why?

Rush firmly believes he is not. Please fill me in on both sides of the argument.thanks

I thought when I heard the news of Flynn’s resignation that with an adult now in the Oval Office there would be no problem whatever finding an excellent replacement to fill that important position.

“I can vouch for Bob, he was my boss ....”

Wow that is kind of neat to have a freeper actually know one of the people under consideration. So he has my vote also...if Trump asked me :)

The Left-wing media are fomenting all kind of rumors so I wouldn’t trust anything until confirmed by at least 2 independent and significant (read conservative) sources.

Howard. Harward. The MSM has forgotten about proofreading; one of those old-school ideas like factual reporting.

The GOPe and spooks no doubt conspired to do Flynn in.

Flynn had been very unpopular in intelligence when he was forced from running the DIA and by making Flynn an issue, Priebus escaped Trump’s initial impulse to can him for betrayal and leaks. So when the two interests overlapped (and then Jared probably weighed in on the GOPe side), it was apparently too much from Trump to stand strong on.

Good.
Flynn didn’t have the “Right Stuff”.
Everyone screws up sometimes. But not everyone quits.
Flynn might be an honorable and qualified man, but he caved too easily.
I’m hoping Bob Harward gets the post.

Here’s what my criteria for this position and a Navy SEAL will have these qualities.

WORK ETHIC
1) Never give up.
2) There are times when the only choices you have are bad ones. You will still need to choose and proceed.
3) The quickest way is the best.
4) Always put out more effort than anyone else.
5) Pull your weight and do your share. Earn what you want.
6) Do not coddle the lazy. Darwin and Murphy will deal with them.
7) There is no such thing as luck. You make your own luck.
8) Own your mistakes, you can never advance if you make excuses or blame others.
9) Everyone screws up. You are no different. Own it and continue the job.
10) Learn loyalty, don’t give it blindly but loyalty and trust go hand in hand.
11) Finish all jobs.
12) You have to be willing to accept loss, so accept it when it happens.
13) You have to do what is needed. You don’t get to pick what you have to do.
14) You do what you have to do to get what you want or need.
15) The important things are always simple.
16) The simple things are always hard.
17) If it’s stupid & it works, it ain’t stupid.
18) Keep it simple.
19) Adapt.
20) Adapt to overcome.
21) It’s better to seek forgiveness than ask permission.
22) There is no such thing as coincidence.
23) Tell the truth about everything, even if it involves a disagreeable, embarrassing or undesired outcome.
24) If you are the leader, trust your subordinates to do their job and do not micromanage them. They know how to get the job done; let them, even though it isn’t the way you would have done it yourself.
25) If a decision is required, then make one. Do not procrastinate a difficult decision.
26) Always strive to win. Another name for “second place” is “first loser”.
27) Fight for what you stand for. If you don’t fight for the things you stand for, then you really don’t stand for them.

CONDUCT
1) Chivalry is not dead, it’s a Warriors’ Code (and only practiced by warriors).
2) Conduct yourself with honor and be honest; honor and honesty go hand in hand, so defend your honor and your dignity.
3) Never leave a man behind.
4) Never sacrifice anyone for yourself, if you do, you lose your honor.
5) Never screw over your buddy or co-worker, another means of losing your honor.
6) Never put a buddy or coworker into an embarrassing situation.
7) Never trust anyone with a history of screwing his buddies over (no matter how nice they seem).
8) Always tell the truth. The truth is hard enough to remember without having to remember the details of some tall tale.
9) Never lie to someone who trusts you; and never trust someone who has ever lied to you.
10) Never ask someone to lie for you, no matter how important it is to you, they will slip up eventually, because people are not hardwired to lie for someone else.
11) Never ask someone else to lie for you, no matter how small the lie. You will permanently lose the respect of the person you are asking to lie for you.
12) If you absolutely have to lie, then, be very specific or you won’t remember it.
13) Family first: you do what you have to for family (no matter what it is, how expensive or how dangerous).
14) Treat everyone the same.
15) Never start trouble and never turn your cheek. You may not have started it, but you will end it.
16) Have a plan.
17) Perfect plans aren’t.
18) Have a back-up plan, because the first plan one won’t work
19) Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.
20) Don’t be the asshole in the group and criticize no one.
21) The word coward should be the most reviled word you know.
