A Brief and Appalling History of the Department of Education

Congratulations to Secretary DeVos....It is time to resuscitate the Constitution of the United States vis-à-vis the responsibility for education.

[huge snip]

In 1866, Congressman Andrew J. Rogers, a Democrat representing New Jersey's 4th Congressional District, spoke eloquently against a bill to establish a federal Department of Education. Mr. Rogers declared that the bill:

... proposes to put under the supervision of a bureau established at Washington all the schools and educational institutions of the different States of the Union by collecting such facts and statistics as will warrant them by amendments hereafter to the law now attempted to be passed, to control and regulate the educational system of the whole country.

He reiterated:

[N]o man can find anywhere in the letter or spirit of the Constitution one word that will authorize the Congress of the United States to establish an Education Bureau. If Congress has the right to establish an Educational Bureau ... for the purpose of collecting statistics and controlling the schools of the country, then by the same parity of reason, a fortiori, Congress has the right to establish a bureau to supervise the education of all the children that are to be found in ... this country. You will not stop at simply establishing a bureau for the purpose of paying officers to collect and diffuse statistics in reference to education.

Look[ing] at the Department of Education today. In 2014, the DoE budget was $67.3 billion, proposed to rise to $68.6 billion in 2015. The bureaucratic state's camel, with all its attendant federal employees, is indeed thriving inside the national government tent, and American taxpayers are paying the fees to feed it. Secretary DeVos should put Rep. Rogers's comments on the wall of her office and be inspired by them daily.

When it was made a cabinet level department in 1979 (Jimmy Carter) it had a budget of $14.5 billion. $68.6 billion probably doesn’t even cover inflation and devalued dollar. Clearly what is needed is even MORE money.

Sad to think about the level of high school education I received (graduated in 1979!) compared to what my kids had.

And on the camel’s back were socialists, especially the Marxist-socialist adherents of The Frankfurt School in the 1940’s, a nasty unAmerican bunch that brought us sensitivity training and consensus building (techniques of indoctrination), and pushed into our schools using Columbia U. as HQ.

So now they will give us charters with appointed school boards run by the global corp. elites. The same crew that delocalized and set up UNESCO ed will now run in for the solution.
Pre-65 American public ed with teachers permitted to teach a classical liberal education has been supplanted by indoctrination/group think, data mining, testing and using kids for global economy training.

Completely eliminate the Department of Education. Turn over their data to the states with a suggestion that they maintain any data worth sharing, but otherwise . . . scorched earth. Leave nothing behind to build on, no two stones one on top of another. Lease the buildings to productive private companies.

We have to create facts on the ground. Whether President Trump has four years or eight years, we want to make it as hard as possible for the socialists to regain their death grip on the minutia of our lives. The unconstitutional and useless Department of Education is a good place to start.
