Mulvaney Narrowly Confirmed by Senate as OMB Director
US News and World Report ^ | 02/16/2017 | By Gabrielle Levy

The Senate on Thursday confirmed Rep. Mick Mulvaney to lead the Office of Management and Budget under President Donald Trump, placing the South Carolina Republican in a key White House role that holds significant sway over the administration's spending priorities.

Mulvaney is one of the founding members of the House Freedom Caucus, the hard-line group of some 40 congressmen who have yanked the GOP conference in the chamber to the right and were instrumental in forcing out former House Speaker John Boehner in 2015.

The Senate approved Mulvaney's nomination mostly along party lines, 51 to 49, with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., casting the decisive vote in Mulvaney's favor.

One Republican, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, broke with the GOP to vote against Mulvaney.

McCain, in announcing his decision to split with his colleagues on Wednesday night, said Mulvaney's history of prioritizing the shrinking of the federal government and spending – including on the military – made it impossible to support him.

"It is with great reluctance that I come to the floor of the Senate to rise in opposition to the nomination of Congressman Mick Mulvaney," McCain, a security hawk and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said on the floor Wednesday night. "Unfortunately, Congressman Mulvaney has spent his last six years in the House of Representatives pitting the national debt against our military."

McCain was similarly critical of Mulvaney during a confirmation hearing last month, calling his House colleague "detached from the reality of what these cuts have meant to military service members" and adding that he was concerned about Mulvaney's "support for reckless budget strategies that led to a government shutdown."

In 2001, the Diamondbacks won the World Series by one run. That’s as “narrow” as it gets but they got the trophy and were the world champions.

RE: Pissing off both Dems and McCain. Now that’s a win win.

McCain thinks that because Mulvaney is a spending hawk, he will also be recommending cuts to the military. THAT is is his openly stated reason for voting no.

AZ had help of it being soon after 9-11, which I believe effected the Yankees considerably. So I see it as AZ barely eeked out a win.

What a hoot!

McCain tries to pass off the idea he was the most Conservative guy to consider Mulvaney.

Is he so senile he thinks that idea is even for a moment going to fool the public?

McCain is one of those guys that could come up with a premise for outlawing water and food, if it served his master Soros.

I guess McCain needs to sit up and lift up one of those chins and pay attention. The President’s public stance is that the military will be rebuilt bigger and better than ever. Hopefully that also mean less ‘fabulous’ though.

McCain is more than partly responsible for today's hate filled tirade/rhetoric from the Socialists in this country rather than give President Trump a chance....McCain forgave his Vietnamese torturer's for his five years of captivity at the mercy of his captors hands...BUT...can't seem to put aside a dumb remark made in the heat of political battle....by not doing so, McCain is doing irreparable harm to his country.

Dwight Eisenhower or Patton He is NOT!

McCain is full of crap. I don’t know the real reason why this prick opposed Mulvaney, but it has nothing to do with military spending; maybe Mccain is simply senile.
President Trump has consistently and repeatedly, including several times today stated that restoring our military strength is one of his top priorities.

“Mulvaney Narrowly Confirmed by Senate as OMB Director”

What do you call the guy who graduates last in his medical school class (i.e. the guy who “narrowly passed”)?

Doctor.

Mulvaney is OMB Director, with the same powers and influence as if he had been unanimously approved.

I’m tired of these crybabies and their hissy fits. Every single thing that is said or done, they have to get in the last (derogatory) word...like a bunch of 5-year-olds.

“THAT is his openly stated reason for voting no.”

McCain is as big a liar as anyone in the media. Anything he says is presumptively a lie, until and unless proven true.
