He's the founder of a Californian independence movement - just don't ask him why he lives in Russia

Louis J. Marinelli is a man on a quixotic mission: to help California secede from the United States and become an independent country. Surprisingly, this quest has been going relatively well of late. Marinelli's group, Yes California, is attempting to collect 585,000 signatures necessary to place a secessionist question on the 2018 ballot. Buoyed by California's already tense relationship with President Donald Trump, the campaign has received a large amount of press coverage and support over the past few months.

But for the 30-year-old Yes California president, there remains one annoying problem: People keep asking him why he lives in Russia.

In the wake of Yes California's recently acquired momentum, a lot of people have taken note of Marinelli's unusual home base.

Numerous articles have appeared in the Californian media noting Martinelli's choice of residence. On social media, discussions about Martinelli often take on a deeply conspiratorial tone.

May be safer that way. Remember Samantha Smith.

All I have to say to California is “Please don’t throw me in that briar patch.”

I’m not signing it, that’s for damn sure!
I can support us dividing California into two states, but not actually leaving the union. We would spend ourselves into oblivion in no time, just like Brazil or Puerto Rico.

There’s no mystery in this. The answer is obvious. He works for Trump (who of course works for Putin).

Think about it. California secedes. Immediately the population of illegals in the US drops by about a third. Illegal “problem” doesn’t look so overwhelming to Trump supporters and he claims substantial progress on campaign promise.

With California also go its massive infrastructure problems, public employee pension problems, massive support for health care, etc. -— freeing up money for Trump to reward those states where he got majority of votes.

Putin, its true, gets California. However, what appears to western leaders as the problem of “ungovernable” California is just another Chechnya type situation for him. California “resistance” is brutally suppressed. Vlad reserves the California coast from Malibu to Santa Barbara, takes up surfing, builds a wonderful compound in the former site of Ojai.

Everybody wins! Except Californians, of course. But who gives a shit about them anyway. They just get what they’ve got coming.

They’ll never leave and drop such a heavy representation of islamists as they have crawling around in Congress.

Democrats have worked too hard to let California and all those votes and court rulings leave the Union.

Just one thing, Vesparado. Assuming the scenario you described takes place, will Trump have to extend the proposed wall to go around California, too?

No, man. Go on. Secede. I want to see what happens if North Korea nukes you, and you have to defend yourselves with your own army, navy, and air force.

Californians brag about your sixth-largest world economy. You've been building your economy on the backs of the taxpayers from 49 other states.

Go on. Secede.

They’re going to run into the same problem that South Carolina ran into in 1861. All that Federally owned land. They just can’t take that.

“I can support us dividing California into two states, but not actually leaving the union. We would spend ourselves into oblivion in no time, just like Brazil or Puerto Rico.”

And just think what this would likely do to property values here. California becoming it’s own “country” would be the final nail in it’s coffin and the destruction of it’s property values. Illegal aliens, would not be able to buy housing here at current prices.

And at the moment, the Feds “own” 45% of California. And all you a$$holes who are here clucking about CA leaving the union are just that, a$$holes, and brainless ones at that!

That's my feeling on it too. They have a lot to learn about arrogance.

Plus those 55 electoral votes would be soo nice to not have next time.

OK, he lives in Russia.

The question I have is, did he vote for Hillary ?

He is associated with a Russian known as Alexandr V. Ionov, who in turn is associated with a wacky group in St. Petersburg Florida called Uhuru House. And, apparently to the FSB.
