Skip to comments.Alan Colmes, Buffoon and Patsy, Was Fox News’ Original Liberal Weakling (Slate)

The death of Fox News contributor Alan Colmes, who passed away in New York City this week at the age of 66, has been greeted with an outpouring of emotion from the channels on-and-off-the-air talent. Colmes, it seems, was a nice guy, a good friend, and an ideal colleague: all qualities one would imagine people who have had to spend their lives around the likes of Roger Ailes and Bill OReilly would welcome. And while one should usually view tributes to the recently departed with a forgiving cynicism, in this case they are all too believable: Colmes was the most absurd, useless, and mocked television personality in America for many years, precisely because he was nice. In the context of Fox News, being a nice guyand a liberal nice guy at thatmeant being a buffoon, and a patsy. Colmes not only played the part to perfectionhe defined it.
Colmes had a radio career, but he will almost surely be remembered for his job co-hosting Hannity & Colmes, the dreadful, morally bankrupt, Foxified version of Crossfire that ran for a dozen years and birthed the even more dreadful and morally bankrupt Hannity. The joke about Hannity & Colmes was always that Hannity dominated it to such an extent that Colmes was left as a mere bystander, asking soft questions while Hannity berated whatever liberal guest they brought on that night. This was of course trueColmes air of nearly amused passivity became a running joke in itselfbut it understated the way the format of the show set him up to fail. . .

I am really sick of these venom filled pustules.
The author is rabid...a horrible thing to witness...
He was even remembered fondly here on FR...VERY unusual for a liberal.
Leftists eat their own.
It’s what they do.
Liberals are seething with hatred now. It's like an infection they always had, but though it dwells in their lymph system, at the moment it's a chronic puss enflamed abscess at the surface of the skin. May the inflammation increase, may puss spray all over America, may the gaping infection be exposed to the sunlight!
I have no fond memories of him at all....
Sorry to hear of his passing. Although I disagreed with him, he seemed like a very nice guy! RIP Alan!
Alan Colmes was the Washington Generals of Hannity & Colmes.
All I was saying is that FR people are a lot kinder than liberals when somebody (anybody) dies.
I was not a fan of his because he was a screaming liberal, but I cannot and would not even think about speaking so repulsively about him as this writer has. The man is dead; show a modicum of respect, you classless liberal.
I HATED his views, but for some reason am very saddened.
I NEVER saw him as a mean guy, or bitter and angry.
Like most dems.
He was the Joe Scarborough of FOX but a good guy.
Slate's just trying to cover for their own Michael Kinsley.
Robert Novak regularly reduced him to stuttering incoherence on "Crossfire."
The nasty little cuck twit who wrote this article.
These people are sick and demented.
It as if we were back in the seventies, and all of the Mentally incapable were once again allowed to roam the streets.
We need a Nationwide “come to Jesus” moment...Bigly!
I actually laughed as I read the article. Not for comes but at how unstable the left is after trumps victory. Everything triggers them. Even the death of a,fellow liberal.
Watching Colmes for more than 30 seconds left me wanting to punch him in his weasel face, so I didn’t see much of the show. I’d guess that the authors real beef is that Hannity kicked Colmes’ ass and the author is now blaming the victim.
Colmes was more of a modern (not classic) liberal than a hard core leftist. That of course is unacceptable to the latter who now define the Democrat party.
