Cold extermination: One of greatest mass extinctions was due to an ice age
Science News ^ | 03/06/2017 | Université de Genève

Earth has known several mass extinctions over the course of its history. One of the most important happened at the Permian-Triassic boundary 250 million years ago. Over 95% of marine species disappeared and, up until now, scientists have linked this extinction to a significant rise in Earth temperatures. But researchers from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Switzerland, working alongside the University of Zurich, discovered that this extinction took place during a short ice age which preceded the global climate warming.

Extreme cold is worse than a few degrees of warming? Who could have guessed?

I drove a big SUV for fifteen years trying to do my part to avoid another one.

Cold kills.

Far more people die every year from cold than from heat.

Humans are a tropical species. Without advances in technology we could not live in most other areas.

This is what makes my head explode: cold is the greater threat to life than heat. A couple of degrees warmer won't hurt anything; it will actually help the world in so many ways. A couple degrees colder, and it's crop failure and starvation.

I grew up in the South in the days before air conditioning. Not once did anyone I know feel in danger of dying. On the other hand, cold can kill you, real fast.

The thing I liked about growing up where it can get pretty cold is how much fun that made dating in high school.

We had the oil embargo so the cost of gas was high.

I’d take my high school sweetheart home from a date and then turn off the engine in the pickup to “save gas”.

No engine running....no heater.

Better snuggle up and stay warm.

Good times. Good times.

Those pesky neanderthals, first they discover fire and put up huge clouds of smoke to block the sun, making it colder, then they figure it out smoke isn’t good, and all the fires create global warming.

Humans should be made extinct. (except for elitists, ofcourse)

And those who serve them. Pajama Boy wouldn't last long if he had to make his own hot chocolate.

EXTINCTION is NO BIG DEAL

The world still has many species after 95% went extinct before. Therefore ...

Remember the big liberal pissy-pants freak-out over nuclear winter?

I guess they’ve all moved on to bigger and better things.

If we’d only had some liberals around then, they could have passed a tax bill and saved all those extinctions. /s

People, plants, the environment in general, have done well and flourished during “warm” spells here on earth. Those who worry about a “point zero something” raise in temps should be grateful it’s going up, not down. If they want “hard times”, a prolonged cold spell should suit them just fine .... if it gets cold enough that ice/snow/freezing rain don’t melt but accumulate, as godless as many of them are, they’ll be praying for some warmth.

“this extinction took place during a short ice age which preceded the global climate warming.”

Rev up the SUVs and crank up the coal-fired electric generation plants. They may be the only things between us and another catastrophic ice age!

Ah, yes, Nuclear Winter.

There’s an idea! If this Globull Worming crap gets out of hand, we can just nuke the Norks and the Camel Jockeys in Iran, and cool things right down. Man-made equilibrium!
