I’m all for energy self-sufficiency, but I wish they wouldn’t be running this thing through Tornado Alley. Even a smaller tornado could cause millions of dollars in damage to this pipeline. There are far fewer tornadoes just west of these states, where the pipeline could go with very little risk of being damaged by a twister.

The pipeline to the coast has been in the works for a long time.

As for shutting down the oil sands — not happening. Lower petro prices do reduce new development. However, once production has been started, the marginal cost of extraction is far, far lower than the average cost (which includes all the sunk costs). Furthermore, government royalty payments are reduced, when the price of oil drops. The oil companies thus take a larger share of the sales, when the price is lower.

Meanwhile you (i.e. Americans) continue to get a bargain, because you have considerable monopsony powers, until the pipeline to the coast gets built.

That’s my worry as well, but the people who actually worked on and planned the pipe that I talked to said that after some titanic scale meetings and research the path they chose was the absolute minimum headache in terms of legal battles, land rights, etc. So if this was the EASY way I can only imagine what was the HARD way.

THEN .. HIRE A COMPLETE SQUAD OF (former military types - with police training), TO STAND WATCH OVER THE PLACE (they needs the jobs)... WE DON’T NEED ANY MORE PEOPLE SHOWING UP WITH A BLOW TORCH AND CREATING A HOLE IN THE PIPELINE .. ESPECIALLY DURING THE NIGHT WHEN THE PIPELINE IS FILLED WITH OIL.

Will they build a refinery or other processing facilities at the end of the pipeline?

The oil in the Keytone pipeline will be going to refineries on the Texas coast designed for this type crude.
