Stephen Piscotty had the worst trip around the bases ever
NBC ^ | April 4, 2017 | Bill Baer

Posted on 04/05/2017 6:02:01 AM PDT by Enchante

On Tuesday night against the Cubs, Piscotty endured the worst trip around the base paths probably ever. It started with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Piscotty was hit on the right elbow by a Jake Arrieta pitch.

This is one of the more bizarre things I've ever heard of in sports. The guy gets hit THREE times in one circuit of the bases. First, he gets hit by a pitch. Then, he gets hit by the throw at 2nd base. Then, he gets hit yet AGAIN (this time in the head) by the throw at the plate.

He may want to go hide out for a few days and stay away from ladders, moving vehicles, and anything that could be hazardous to his health.

I wonder if the UMPs ignored the interference rule for DPs?

And he just signed a six-year $33.5 million contract.

Without a doubt, the play from a couple of years ago where a guy attempted TWO steals of second base on the same trip around the base path has to go down as the strangest thing I've seen in baseball. He was successful in his first attempt but ended up back on first base through a bizarre series of events ... and then was caught stealing second later in the inning.

MLB had to implement a rule change to close a loophole on this one:

The Baserunning Adventures of Jean Segura

Somebody explain to me why this wasn’t an earned run. If ever a dude earned a run it was him.

Last night, of all things I was reading again about Ty Cobb stealing IN ONE INNING, 2nd,3rd and Home. Surprisingly, others have done it, too.

There were no DP attempts. The play at second was a stolen base (hit by the catcher's throw). The play at home came after the second baseman couldn't make a barehanded pick-up on a slow-roller. When the fielder retrieved the ball and threw home, the throw hit the runner scoring from second.

He didn't actually intend to head back to first. He thought he was out and was trotting back to the dugout when the first base coach told him to stand on first just to see how the play was called.

The umpire correctly called the other (trailing) runner out for being on the same base as the runner in front of him, but with two guys on the same base at the end of the play they were confused about which one was out.

I love things like this ... what was the rule change?

Point taken, but he shouldn’t have left 2nd base. He didn’t know/remember the rule that it would be the trailing runner called out.

This made me think of Richie Ashburn, the Phillies Hall of Fame center fielder and announcer. In one at bat, he hit a line drive foul into the stands that hit a woman in the face, injuring the woman. Medics came over and were carrying her out on a stretcher when Ashburn lined another ball into the stands, striking the woman again as she was being carried out.

It's amazing how many things like that aren't quite as rare as you might think.

Here's something seemingly outlandish that happens a few times every season (I think it happened SIX times last year alone): a pitcher striking out four batters in one inning. This can only happen if the pitcher strikes out three batters, and one of the batters gets to first base because the catcher doesn't handle the third strike cleanly.

This happened at a hockey game and not a baseball game, but it is easily the best "A-hole Fan Karma" incident I've ever seen:

My understanding is that the rule against running back to a prior base only applies if the runner does so for the purpose of confusing the opposing team or "making a travesty of the game." Neither one of those applied in this case, so I believe they cleaned the rule up or issued a clarification that would apply in the future.

If I remember correctly, the umpires erred in the Segura case by not making it clear to him that HE was safe and the other guy was out. They made the "Out!" call after Segura slid back to the base, so he was face-down on the ground and had no idea who they were calling out.

I’d give him a pass on that. Some things happen so infrequently that even the umpires have to huddle together just to square things away.
